2010 Visions Artists

Iris Charabi-Berggren
Interdisciplinary artist
San Francisco

“In this residency, I am hoping to be distracted, not by my kids but rather by other creative professionals like myself. I am excited about the potential growth and benefits that will stem from a complete emersion in an art community, located in a non-urban, child-proof, and green environment, away from my fast-paced urban life.”

Ala Ebtekar
Painter
Berkeley

“I am fascinated with the possibilities of exploring Los Angeles' Tehrangeles as a simultaneous door. I welcome the opportunity for a one-month encounter with the layered visual and material culture of contemporary L.A.... I am interested in the nostalgias for both a lost Iran and a mythical Persia in Los Angeles, found in in Persian storefronts, neighborhoods, ritual events, pageantry, and festivities.”

Prajakti Jayavant
Painter
San Francisco

“During my Visions from the New California residency, the openness of the studio at Djerassi offered physical space for contemplation and varying perspectives. A residency is a time warp.  It’s a set time for productivity and support; a chance to be part of a new community that will provide support in the future. Obviously, this is a reciprocal idea.”

Rebecca Lowry
Conceptual artist
Los Angeles

“While rich and varied, my path to fine art practice has not brought me into contact with others engaged directly in the production of art. Much of this new world remains an intriguing mystery to me – it is quite different than the clear-cut profession of architecture. A residency will be a new opportunity to encounter artists at different stages of their careers and to learn from them in a more removed and focused setting. Exposure to a wider variety of artists and the opportunity to observe their processes would be invaluable to me at this point in my career, as I am figuring out how I am going to refine and proceed with my own practice.”

Ethan Turpin
Mixed media artist
Santa Barbara

“The goals of my practice are to challenge commonplace assumptions, and celebrate the phenomena of perception. A tendency toward experimentation leads me to work across new and old media using the broad sensibilities of collage and remix. My interest in history coincides with a practice of fusing pre-electronic visual technologies with digital imaging and video.”

Meeson Pae Yang
Installation artist
Torrance

“I was directly influenced by being at the Exploratorium and learning from the exhibits. The change of location and environment allowed me to have freedom, time, and space to explore my work. Time went by so quickly. I will remember how thankful I was to have an opportunity to spend four solid weeks working on my art with no distractions.”
