Asad Faulwell
Mixed media artist
Simi Valley
“My work explores the relationship between political faith and religious faith through an examination of the political climate in the post-WW2 Middle East. Through my work I attempt to reexamine and reevaluate history while also touching on the broader issues related to these historical events that still effect our lives today. Being able to step outside of my day-to-day life and focus completely on my work will allow me to explore new areas in my practice. I am also interested in attending a residency outside my immediate area so that I can be exposed to new ideas and surroundings.... Stepping outside of my comfort zone will have a positive impact on my work, studio practice and familiarity with art communities outside of the Los Angeles area.”

Painter/sculptor

“This residency would give me permission to break out of my daily routine by providing an extended period of time to devote solely to my art practice. Being able to put aside the pressures and distractions of every day life would allow for a more intense focus, concentration and clarity. I feel this would create a mindset conducive to nourishing current projects, as well as experimentation and creation of new work. I look upon residencies as providing both solitude and community. Both are essential components in my art practice.”

“Participating in Visions from the New California will be an opportunity to pursue my work in an environment that supports the creative endeavors of artists. The year after graduation is a challenging period due to the transition from the institutional support offered through universities to stepping out into a potentially fruitful, yet often unsupported professional practice. Working with a community of other artists will provide the much needed support, criticism and dialogue that is necessary to begin a well-informed professional practice.”

crystal am nelson
Media artist
San Francisco
“I did not go to art school in order to work in an office. In order for me to fully understand how my work functions in the world, and not just the art world, I must make the work. In order for me to fully understand the ways in which I as an artist and cultural producer arrive at a vocabulary that means something, that extends, contributes to and expands the discourse...I must make the work. Although financial stability is a real and crucial necessity for me to thrive as an artist, time and space are just as significant. I am at a critical point in my practice and the Visions award offers me the time, space and sufficient funding to focus 100% on projects that require all three elements in order to advance toward.”

Anja Ulfeldt
Interdisciplinary artist
Oakland
“My studio practice is closely related to my surroundings at any given time. To participate in a residency would give me an opportunity to enter new environments and explore new processes in my work by moving away from daily routines in exchange for fresh spaces and dialogues. I would love to live and work in a supportive community setting among a group of intensely focused artists.”

Andre Woodward
Sculptor
Costa Mesa
“My interest in this award is strongly based on the mission statement of the program itself, as my work is about the changing dynamics of our human environment, and the origin of my work is directly related the urban landscape of California. It would be a great honor to have my work recognized for being a vision that will define California in the future. The possibility of having a month to spend on further developing my practice in a place other than my garage is very exciting and would be somewhat of a dream come true.”
