Applying for Midwestern Voices and Visions

Application Deadline: August 15, 2009

Application Process: We encourage all applicants to apply online. Please assemble your work samples and support materials before you begin the online application. (If you are not able to apply online, please download the application and checklist to submit by mail.) The application materials include the following:

  • application form
  • work samples
  • support materials

WORK SAMPLES

General Guidelines

  • Work submitted should be from the previous 2 years
  • Follow requirements for how to name your files
  1. Visual Artists

    • If applying online: submit no more than 7 examples of work in any of the following formats [NOTE: a single PDF or PowerPoint with all work samples is preferred]
      • PDF or PowerPoint: One image per page. Submit images only, not descriptive text. Order images to correspond with Work Sample Description page. Do not apply slide transitions or timings.
        • Name your file in this format: LastnameFirstname_work-samples.pdf or .ppt

      • JPG/JPEG: Images must be at least 72dpi and at least 600 pixels on one side. File size should not exceed 3MB per image.
        • Name your files in this format: LastnameFirstname_1-Title.jpg, LastnameFirstname_2-Title.jpg, etc.

    • If applying by mail: submit no more than 7 examples of work in any of the following formats on a CD readable by Windows and Mac [NOTE: a single PDF or PowerPoint with all work samples is preferred]
      • PDF or PowerPoint: One image per page. Submit images only, not descriptive text. Order images to correspond with Work Sample Description page. Do not apply slide transitions or timings.
        • Name your file in this format: LastnameFirstname_work-samples.pdf or .ppt

      • JPG/JPEG: Images must be at least 72dpi and at least 600 pixels on one side. File size should not exceed 3MB per image.

  2. Performance Artists / Film, Video & Animation Artists / Choreographers

    • If applying online
      • Submit up to 5 video files (.m4v, .mov, .rm, .wmv, or .mpeg). No more than 10 minutes will be reviewed. Selections may be edited/shortened to fit submission time constraints. NOTE: Not all browsers and internet connections will accommodate uploading large multimedia files. Consider converting your media to a more compressed file format (such as .m4v), or submitting your work by mail or URL.
        • Name your files in this format: LastnameFirstname_1-Title.m4v, LastnameFirstname_2-Title.m4v, etc.

      • Web link: Submit web links for up to 5 work samples. Indicate the URLs on your Work Sample Description page (send URLs that link directly to each work sample, not a general link to your portfolio). No more than 10 minutes of video will be reviewed.

    • If applying by mail
      • Submit a CD with up to 5 video files (.m4v, .mov, .rm, .wmv, or .mpeg files). Place each selection on a separate track. No more than 10 minutes will be reviewed. Selections may be edited/shortened to fit submission time constraints.
        • Name your files in this format: LastnameFirstname_1-Title.m4v, LastnameFirstname_2-Title.m4v, etc.

  3. Composers / Songwriters / Sound Artists

    • If applying online
      • Submit up to 5 audio or video files (.mp3, .mp4, .wav, .au, .ra, .m4v, .mov, .rm, .wmv, or .mpeg). No more than 10 minutes of work will be reviewed. Work may be edited/shortened to fit submission time constraints. NOTE: Not all browsers and internet connections will accommodate uploading large multimedia files. Consider converting your media to a more compressed file format (such as .mp3 or .m4v), or submitting your work by mail or URL.
        • Name your files in this format: LastnameFirstname_1-Title.mp3, LastnameFirstname_2-Title.mp3, etc.

      • Web link: Submit web links for up to 5 work samples. Indicate the URLs on your Work Sample Description page (send URLs that link directly to each work sample, not a general link to your portfolio). No more than 10 minutes of work will be reviewed.

    • If applying by mail
      • Submit a CD with up to 5 audio or video files (playable by QuickTime, RealPlayer, Windows Media Player, or iTunes). Place each selection on a separate track. No more than 10 minutes of work will be reviewed. Work may be edited/shortened to fit submission time constraints.
        • Name your files in this format: LastnameFirstname_1-Title.mp3, LastnameFirstname_2-Title.mp3, etc.

  4. Writers (fiction and non-fiction, any genre)

    • If applying online
      • Submit up to 15 pages of recent work in a single Word (.doc) or PDF file: use 12 pt. font, double-spaced (unless in play or screenplay format)
        • Name your file in this format: LastnameFirstname_work-samples.pdf or .doc

    • If applying by mail
      • Submit 3 copies, double-sided, of up to 15 pages of recent work: use 12 pt. font, double-spaced unless in play or screenplay format

  5. Poets

    • If applying online
      • Submit up to 10 recent poems in a single Word (.doc) or PDF file: use 12 pt. font, and do not submit more than 15 pages
        • Name your file in this format: LastnameFirstname_work-samples.pdf or .doc

    • If applying by mail
      • Submit 3 copies, double-sided, of up to 10 recent poems: use 12 pt. font, and do not submit more than 15 pages

  6. Interdisciplinary Artists

    • We welcome submissions from artists working in more than one genre or artform. Applicants may submit a combination of the approved work samples listed above. Please utilize the formats required for each type of submission. If you choose to submit a combination of formats, do not send the maximum number of work samples in all formats – please adapt the submission limits to the types of samples you send in (for example, if you are a spoken word artist, you could submit 5 minutes of video and several pages of writing; if you are a multi-genre writer, you could submit 10 pages of fiction and/or non-fiction work and 5 poems).



SUPPORT MATERIALS [please prepare these into one document (.doc or .pdf) before you begin the online application, and save your file as LastnameFirstname_support-materials.doc or .pdf]:

  1. Work Sample Description (list work samples in the order in which you'd like them reviewed):
    • Title of work
    • Year of completion
    • Work sample details
      • Still images: Include materials used and dimensions; include URLs if submitting web link for work samples
      • Time-based art, dance, music, performance, etc: Include details such as performance date and location, performers, collaborators, etc., as relevant; include URLs if submitting web link for work samples
  2. Current resume and/or statement of artistic history (include any awards, fellowships, or residencies)
  3. Brief description of your educational background (no more than 1/2 page)
  4. Brief statement about your current work (no more than 1/2 page)
  5. Why you are interested in this award and/or why you would like to participate in a residency (no more than 1/2 page)
  6. Any special requirements you may have or equipment you may need during a residency
