New Voices of Modern Arab Literature | Host Sites

Eighteen artist residency programs in 6 countries participated in this project by offering residencies of at least one month to the Beirut39 writers. The residencies are located in urban centers and rural communities, in restored chateaus and rustic retreats, and offered the Beirut39 writers an opportunity to connect with other artists-in-residence and with new audiences.

  18th Street Arts Center | Santa Monica, California - U.S.
18th Street's mission is to provoke public dialogue through contemporary art-making. 18th Street is a community that values art-making as an essential component of a vibrant, just and healthy society; encourages and supports the creation of cutting-edge contemporary art; and fosters collaboration and interaction between artists and arts organizations locally, nationally and internationally.
Bogliasco Foundation, Liguria Study Center | Bogliasco, Italy
The Liguria Study Center is located in a series of villas on the Italian Riviera, in the small town of Bogliasco near Genoa. The Center provides residential fellowships for individuals working on advanced creative or scholarly projects in all arts and humanities disciplines, including archaeology, architecture/ landscape architecture, classics, dance, film/video, history, literature, music, philosophy, theater, and the visual arts. While surrounded by a bustling semi-urban environment, the villas and their gardens offer an oasis of calm, with spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea and the Ligurian coastline — an inspiring setting that has proven to be a powerful stimulant for reflection and creativity.
Caravansarai | Istanbul, Turkey
Caravansarai is an independent art production space and meeting point for creators. The production, presentation, library, meeting and living spaces are home to workshops, investigation, public and private events, collaborations and three artist-in-residence programs. Caravansari welcomes visual artists, filmmakers, musicians, scientists, circus performers, architects, choreographers, curators, writers, artisans, urban theorists and all manner of creative people. Caravansarai is an artist-run business adventure, exploring the integration of art and culture into the flow of every-day life.
Civitella Ranieri | Umbertide, Italy
The Civitella Ranieri Center is a workplace for gifted artists, writers and composers from different countries, located in the 15th century Civitella Ranieri castle in the Umbria region of Italy. Civitella Ranieri brings together visual artists, writers and musicians from around the world who demonstrate exceptional talent and an enduring commitment to their disciplines.

 

  Djerassi Resident Artists Program | Woodside, California - U.S.
Djerassi Resident Artists Program annually offers up to 80 residencies to artists working in the visual arts, new genre/media arts, choreography, music composition, and literature. Located on a secluded 560-acre ranch in the Santa Cruz Mountains, forty miles south of San Francisco, the Program is open to local, national, and international artists at all career levels who meet a high standard of excellence. The majestic beauty and remote solitude of the Program’s stunning natural landscape serve as an inspirational backdrop for the intense creative experience that defines a Djerassi residency.
Fes Medina | Fes, Morocco
The Beirut39 residencies are the first in an ongoing series of residencies in the medieval medina of Fes. Fes Medina residencies will give international writers and artists from many cultures the experience of living and working in the extraordinary environment of Fes’ Old City.
Hedgebrook | Whidbey Island, Washington - U.S.
Hedgebrook is a retreat for women writers from around the world. The mission is to support visionary women writers whose stories and ideas shape our culture now and for generations to come. Hedgebrook does this by investing in women who write by providing them with space and time to create significant work, in solitude and community, and by developing an international network to connect alumnae writers with readers and audiences.
  International Writing Program | Iowa City, Iowa - U.S.
The International Writing Program (IWP) is a unique conduit for the world’s literatures, connecting well-established writers from around the globe, bringing international literature into classrooms, introducing American writers to other cultures through reading tours, and serving as a clearinghouse for literary news and a wealth of archival and pedagogical materials. Since 1967, over 1,400 writers from more than 140 countries have been in residence at the University of Iowa.
  Jumeirah | Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Jumeirah — a global hotel and resort group — began hosting artists-in-residence in the Jumeirah Essex House hotel in New York City in 2006, and is expanding its arts-and-culture programs to its properties worldwide. As part of Jumeirah’s Culturally Connected platform, Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management offer guests a glimpse into local cultures, people, and ideas through the portal of art, and support artists by providing residencies and opportunities to share their work with audiences from around the world.
  Kansas City Artists Coalition | Kansas City, Missouri - U.S.
The mission of the Kansas City Artists Coalition Artists Residency Program is to bring artists from around the world together in order to build friendships and improve intercultural understanding. The program's goals are to provide artists with a supportive environment, time, and a large studio space to create art that others in the Kansas City community will be able to view and/or learn from; to enrich the resident artists’ experiences by encouraging travel and the importance of intercultural connections; and to promote the value of exchanging ideas among art-producing peers.
La Napoule Art Foundation | La Napoule, France
La Napoule Art Foundation offers Artists-in-Residence a unique environment of interdisciplinary collaboration and creativity at the Château de La Napoule. The Foundation promotes exceptional talents both recognized and emerging — on the international scene, through cooperation with major organizations and leaders in the arts worldwide. The Chateau de La Napoule is located in the historic seaside town of Mandelieu-La Napoule on the French Riviera. Situated on a spectacular site overlooking the sea, the building dates to the 14th century and is recognized as a Monument Historique for its incredible restoration and architectural details.
  Millay Colony | Austerlitz, New York - U.S.
The Millay Colony welcomes writers, visual artists, and composers of all ages and all careers levels. The informal and isolated retreat offers artists an opportunity to work without distraction or expectations. The Millay Colony is located in the Berkshire mountains, at Steepletop, the country estate that belonged to the poet Edna St. Vincent Millay.
  Montalvo Arts Center | Saratoga, California - U.S.
The Sally and Don Lucas Artists Programs at Montalvo Arts Center has earned international recognition as a model of curatorial practice supporting new and challenging contemporary work. Of particular note are the Lucas Programs’ facilities, a complex of ten state-of-the-art, discipline-specific live/work studios and a commons building designed by six teams of renowned architects and artists. Lucas Programs fellows are identified through a recommendation/invitational process that helps ensure support for highly qualified artists with the potential to become major voices in the next generation of artists and thinkers, but who might not normally find their way to residency programs.
  Ragdale Foundation | Lake Forest, Illinois - U.S.
Ragdale was founded on the belief that time and space are not luxuries but necessary elements for creating important new work. Ragdale provides these necessities to artists in the form of two- to eight-week residencies. Add eleven other creative individuals to the mix, acres of idyllic prairie, a family-style dinner each night, and you have Ragdale. Ragdale artists come from all over the country and around the world to create, write, experiment, research, plan, compose, rejuvenate, brainstorm, and work.
  Santa Fe Art Institute | Santa Fe, New Mexico - U.S.
SFAI brings together an outstanding group of emerging and mid-career visual artists and writers of all disciplines. The unique SFAI environment allows residents to be as interactive or private as they wish. Monthly readings, slide lectures and studio tours are some of the most important art events in Northern New Mexico, and draw a broad range of local arts patrons, gallery owners and representatives from local museums.
  Vermont Studio Center | Johnson, Vermont - U.S.
Each year, the Vermont Studio Center hosts 600 outstanding emerging and mid-career painters, sculptors, new genre artists, printmakers, photographers, poets, and writers from across the country and around the world, with up to 55 artists-in-residence at a time. Located in a small New England mill village in the heart of the Green Mountains, the Center’s award-winning studio campus is composed of 30 historic buildings on the banks of the Gihon River, all within walking distance of each other.
  Virginia Center for the Creative Arts | Amherst, Virginia - U.S.
The VCCA is a year-round community that provides a supportive environment for superior national and international visual artists, writers and composers of all economic and cultural backgrounds to pursue their creative work without distraction in a pastoral residential setting. The VCCA is located at Mt. San Angelo, a 12-acre estate in the foothills of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains, about one hour south of Charlottesville.
  Vitosha | Ann Arbor, Michigan - U.S.
Located in a historic castlestone complex, just minutes from University of Michigan, Vitosha operates as an inn, hosting guests from around the world, as well as conferences, retreats, and artist residencies.
