It is hard to explain what it feels like to know that when you get up in the morning you can just sit and write — a journal, poetry, prose — all day long until you are too tired to pick up a pencil or sit at a keyboard, until your ability to put words together cohesively slips from your fingers — not from the fatigue of a long day at a job but from a long day of words bumping up against each other as they struggle to get from your brain to the page.

Becoming Executive Director, Day 1...

Walking into the office today I thought, "This is the day I start as Executive Director. Things will feel different!" The truth is, much is the same -- same desk (it's kind of a mess), same view (grey sky), same music I started the day with yesterday (UNKLE's "War Stories" album, if you're curious). That is the luxury of having served the Alliance for 5-1/2 years already: an understanding of the field, solid relationships with the most amazing board ever, a huge affection for the membership, the knowledge of this space we occupy in the world.

And yet, much is -- and will be -- different. My style, my approach, my connections, the things that resonate and excite, mystify and challenge me will impact the Alliance. My mind is open, my door is open, and I look forward to the impact the Alliance will have on me as well. I welcome your input, your ideas, your curiosity.

It is with great joy and even greater humility that I step into this role today. I am humbled by the work that you do every day, supporting artists in countless ways so that this dream of a vibrant, creative, thought-provoked society can thrive. And I am joyful for the successes we celebrate, the passion we have in abundance, and the generosity of this membership in sharing its vision and energy.

Thank you to all the Alliance members and supporters for being a part of this organization. I am here because you are here. The Alliance board and staff will embark on creating a new strategic plan this spring and as we move forward with our plans for the future, know that you, our members, are at the core of all we do.

Warmest regards,
Caitlin
