Call for Content

The Alliance of Artists Communities is returning to its roots in Portland! Join over 350 arts leaders, funders, educators and artists from across the globe as we host our 26th Annual Conference in Portland, Oregon – October 4-7, 2016.

The 2016 Conference explores bold ideas in supporting creative practice – across disciplines and through diverse contexts. Conference programming will include nut-and-bolts trainings, dynamic discussions and debates, artist keynotes and performances, and networking meet-ups – as well as tours, hikes, and workshops showcasing Portland’s spectacular natural and cultural resources. Seven special tracks will offer attendees a chance to dive deep into a specific theme, including Arts & Ecology, Social Practice, Performing Arts, Equity, and Residencies in the Public Realm.   

All are invited to propose content for this year’s meeting! Submit your ideas by March 21, 2016.

Submissions are accepted for:

  • Conference Sessions, such as panels and roundtable discussions.
  • Creative Content, such as tours of local arts spaces or neighborhoods, artist demos, workshops and pop-up projects.

Proposing Conference Sessions

The Alliance encourages creative, interactive session formats that inspire active discussions. You can read descriptions for 2016 session formats here.

Whether you have a fully-planned panel or simply a great topic idea - all submissions are welcome! Our conference staff is available to suggest panelists and work with organizers to further develop sessions.


Content areas may be on any topic related to advancing today’s artists and/or artist residencies. We hope that all topics will touch on one or more of the following:

  • International perspectives in artistic practice
  • Equity and inclusion in the arts
  • Intersections (uncommon partnerships, collaborations outside of the arts, etc.)
  • Fostering the development of new work in a variety of disciplines
  • Sustaining artist-centered organizations
  • Building best-practices and developing leadership
  • Community-engagement models

 Portland Creative Content

On October 6th and 7th attendees will leave the conference hotel to explore Portland’s established + emerging arts spaces and connect with local arts leaders through off-site tours, workshops, pop-projects, and other creative engagements.

Are you an Oregon-based artist or arts administrator who is interested in organizing an off-site activity as part of the 2016 Conference line-up? Propose an off-site tour, workshop, demo, or pop-up project!



  • Site Visits + Tours – Opportunities to explore a local arts space or project. Attendees spend the afternoon touring a space, participating in workshops, watching demos/performances, and connecting with administrators and artists. Past tours have included a ceramics workshop at Providence’s Steel Yard, a tour of artist-run studios in Kansas City, a Taiko drumming class in San Jose - and so much in between!
  • Walking Tour – Public art, literary references, neighborhood history, ecological or environmental contexts, architecture – all are possible walking tour themes!
  • Pop-up projects – Interactive artist-run projects, performances, installations, or other creative interventions that engage attendees in unexpected activities or moments.

How do I propose an off-site activity?

Download and carefully review guidelines below, then email your idea to! Please provide: your contact info, a description of your proposed off-site activity along with a list of co-facilitators and their affiliations, web links to associated programs and/or artists, estimated timing, and costs. The conference committee will follow-up with additional questions and, if accepted, coordinate with you on timing, attendees, and other logistics.
