Henry Art Gallery
The Henry Art Gallery delivers a direct experience of the art of our time. The museum’s exhibitions bring important works of art to Seattle from throughout the world and bring into public view works of art from the Northwest. These exhibitions and their related programs invite dialogue about contemporary culture, politics, aesthetics and the traditions of visual art and design of the last two centuries. Exhibitions at the Henry frequently present recent or newly commissioned work of visually and conceptually challenging artists. www.henryart.org
Hugo House
Richard Hugo House is a center for the literary arts that supports writers of all ages and backgrounds and promotes the creation of new writing. Hugo House nurtures writers and readers and brings innovative writing classes to people from every background. Programs include the Hugo Literary Series, devoted solely to new commissioned work, and residencies for writers and theater companies. www.hugohouse.org
Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center
The Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center celebrates, nurtures, presents and preserves African American performing arts and cultural legacies. Located in the heart of Seattle within the vibrant Central Area neighborhood, this historic cultural arts institution was established in 1972 as a home for artistic and cultural expression. The center is operated by the City of Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation and has provided 36 years of continuous programming for youth, adults, and families.
Suyama Space
Suyama Space provides opportunities for experimentation, inspiration, and education in contemporary art. Their goal is to serve as a catalyst in the creation of significant new works as well as collaborate with the art community to expand public interest and understanding of contemporary art. Exhibitions are organized by curator Beth Sellars to showcase a full spectrum of established artists of regional, national, and international stature. Of special interest are artists who demonstrate an innovative style and vision combined with an awareness of social, cultural, and political issues. On display during the conference will be an installation by Wade Kavanaugh, created in part while in-residence at The MacDowell Colony. www.suyamapetersondeguchi.com
Western Bridge
A renovated 10,000-square-foot warehouse in Seattle’s industrial district, Western Bridge presents the current state of artmaking through thematic group shows draws from the True Collections, focused exhibitions on contemporary artists, and newly commissioned works. Western Bridge’s warehouse home was built in the mid-50s for a construction company of the same name. The name’s re-use preserves something of the history of the site while indicating the role Western Bridge seeks to play – as a connector between private collecting and public exhibition, and between Seattle and the international contemporary art world. www.westernbridge.org
The Alliance is grateful to Hedgebrook, celebrating its 20th anniversary, for hosting the 2008 Conference through staff and logistical support. The 2008 Conference is supported in part by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and The Ford Foundation.
