What to Know Before You Go

We look forward to welcoming you to Philadelphia, PA for the Alliance of Artists Communities' 28th Annual Conference! Below are a few details you'll want to know before the conference begins.

You may pick up your conference packet in the Alliance registration area at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel (Congress Hall, 4th floor - 1200 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA) at the following times:

  • Monday 10/15: 9 - 10am (for Building Boards participants only)
  • Monday 10/15: 4 - 6pm

Or you may pick up your conference packet in the Alliance registration area at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel (Millennium Hall Foyer, 2nd floor - 1200 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA) at the following times:

  • Tuesday 10/16: 8:30am - 4pm
  • Wednesday 10/17: 8:30am - 2pm
  • Thursday 10/18: 8:30am - 2pm

  • Celebrate Philadelphia Party | Monday 10/15, 6 - 8pm
    Tyler School of Art, Temple University, 2001 N. 13th Street, Philadelphia, PA (enter on Norris between 12th + 13th)
    Help us kick off the 2018 Conference in style! Connect with old friends and make new ones during the festive opening reception at one of the sharpest art schools in Philadelphia. Plus catch current works by Edgar Heap of Birds, Chloƫ Bass, Color Condition, and Sonya Clark. Beer/Wine and hors d'oeuvres will be served!
    Travel tip: If you are coming from the Loews Hotel, a shuttle bus will run every 30 minutes between the hotel and Tyler School of Art. Meet the group in the side lobby of the Hotel ( Millennium Hall Foyer, 2nd floor). First buses depart at 5:30 pm and 5:45pm.

MEET-UPS! Explore Philadelphia by joining with colleagues at these optional, informal gatherings at arts venues + bars!

  • Tuesday Meet-ups (10/16) - Swing by the Clay Studio and discover international residency program and newest exhibits before heading over to La Peg for snacks and drinks!
    6 - 7 pm - The Clay Studio | 139 N. Second Street (1.1 miles from Loews)
    7 - 9 pm - La Peg at FringeArts | 140 N. Columbus Blvd. (at Race St) (1.3 miles from Loews)
    As part of the La Peg meet-up attendees can check out performances and installations at Festival for the People (organized by Philadelphia Contemporary) at Race St. Pier (across the street)!
  • Wednesday Meet-ups (10/17) - Meet the artists behind collective Space 1026 or head to Tiki Philly for a relaxed drink.
    7 - 8:30 pm - Space 1026 | 1026 Arch Street, 2nd floor (0.3 miles from Loews)
    7 - 9 pm - Tiki Philly | 102 S. 13th Street, 1st floor (0.2 miles from Loews)
  • Thursday Meet-up (10/18) - Close out the conference at the Hotel's lively bar and restaurant.
    5:30 - 7:30 pm - Bank & Bourbon at Loews Philadelphia Hotel | 1200 Market Street

Offsite tours will run Wednesday and Thursday afternoon. If you have not signed up for tours - or would like to change your tour preference - you can do so at the registration desk when you arrive. Read more about this year's offerings at:

If you are currently on the waitlist for a tour, please go to the tour assembly location in the Millennium lobby of the Loews Hotel on the day of the tour. Spots often open up and will be granted in the order of the waitlist.


We are excited to offer attendees the chance to participate in 15 minute, one-on-one consultations with national and regional funders - including the National Endowment for the Arts, Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, New York Foundation for the Arts, the MAP Fund + more! There are a limited number of spots and we will reserve meetings on a first-come, first-served basis. Please visit the registration desk when you arrive to learn more about participating funders and to reserve your spot.

Most meeting sessions will take place at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel, 1200 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA unless otherwise noted.

Please refer to the offsite tour description handout to note whether there is transportation provided or whether it is a walking tour. Your printed program lists all venue addresses and volunteer guides will accompany you to tours and parties.


Coffee and tea will be available at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel throughout each morning. While breakfast is not provided during the conference, there are several fantastic coffee shops and restaurants within and a short walk from the hotel. Check out some recommendations here!

Lunch will be provided each day at the hotel. There are a limited number of vegetarian/vegan, gluten-free and other special meals available, based on the stated dietary needs on your registration form. The caterers at the hotel and event locations will do their best to accommodate dietary restrictions - though requests beyond vegan and gluten-free may not be available. Food will be labeled.

Attendees generally wear business casual attire. You should dress to be comfortable for participating in sessions, and for being out and about on tours. Pack an umbrella and walking shoes.


The Alliance is committed to meeting the accessibility needs of all attendees. All plenary presentations will be CART captioned. Conference sessions and most evening events are wheelchair-accessible. Wheelchair accessible tours are noted in the descriptions.

While you are welcome to bring a small number of copies of your organization's brochures/publications to share on your own with other attendees, we will not provide tables for displaying literature. To avoid wasted materials, in lieu of literature display, we will have a slide show of attendees' organizations.

Flying: Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) is about 10 miles from Center City Philadelphia and is conveniently connected to the city center via light rail. Loews Philadelphia Hotel is located at 1200 Market Street in downtown Philadelphia, PA.

Commuter Rail: Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, SEPTA, provides train service between Center City and the Airport on the Airport Regional Rail Line. Trains run every 30 minutes and operate from 4:52 am to 11:52 pm (Center City to Airport) and from 5:07 am to 12:30 am (Airport to Center City). The one-way Regional Rail fare to Center City is $6.75.

Taking the train: 30th Street Station is the main railroad station in Philadelphia and is just 1.3 miles from the Loews Hotel - just hop on the 13th-Market trolley $2.50 from the station. 30th Street Station is served by both Amtrak and Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA). Easy access from cities like New York, Baltimore and Washington, DC!
