The shining heart of the residency was silence and solitude; the opportunity to wrestle with visions and fasten them to the page, to face myself, reflected in a window opening into wildness. For me, this time was a turning point in a lifetime of writing. In the midst of struggling with the perpetual self-doubts and uneven leaps forward of every artist’s life, I came to a place of clear certainty about the power and trustworthiness of what I do.

Emerging Program Institute

February 15-17, 2009
Charlotte, NC & Spartanburg, SC
Hosted by McColl Center for Visual Art & HUB-BUB

Thanks to all of you who participated in our Emerging Program Institute!

Twenty-six individuals involved in developing or redeveloping artists' residencies came together to share their future plans, explore new directions, and examine existing models and practices. Hosted by McColl Center for Visual Art (Charlotte, NC) and HUB-BUB (Spartanburg, SC), these artists' communities offered participants two very different models.

Known for its stunning facilities, McColl Center offered an example of a residency program with structured community projects, renowned exhibitions, and other formal programming that reflects the Charlotte community. HUB-BUB is an up-and-coming residency program for emerging visual artists and writers, offering its residents a variety of ways to connect with and contribute to the local community. Both organizations represent new directions in public engagement, and are leaders in the field for their approaches to supporting creativity in community.

For many just beginning to explore the idea of a new residency program, the Institute offers a supportive peer network and validation of what can seem like a daunting dream. One participant said, "It's a huge boon to know you're not alone, there are others with like passions and values....and to be able to use them as resources. It gives the incentive to move forward with passion and purpose."

Join us in early 2011 for our next Emerging Program Institute!

We felt for the first time that what we are planning to do is part of a great and important movement. We came away refreshed, inspired, and feeling like we were welcome new members of an incredible old community. --Emerging Program Institute attendee

Who should attend: The Institute is geared toward individuals involved in the creation and establishment of new artist-in-residence programs, including founders, directors, board members, and other staff, while directors of residency programs going through significant re-establishment may also find these sessions helpful. Whether in the early planning stages or in the formative years of programming, your organization will benefit from this professional development conference.

The Institute aims to give you the tools and resources to establish solid organizational practices from the start, other models of success, and a strong peer network. We reconize that institutional stability and strategic growth requires commitment at each level of governance; therefore, we encourage multiple staff and/or board members from an organization to participate, and we are offering a discount of $100 for each additional attendee.

The Institute will include a tour and case-study of McColl Center for Visual Art, an urban artists' residency in downtown Charlotte, as well as a visit to HUB-BUB, an emerging artists' residency in the small town of Spartanburg, SC.

The Institute will utilize portions of The Ultimate Residency Resource Guide, published by the Alliance in 2005, and include small-group exercises, interactive seminars, take-home resources, and visits to area residency programs.
