Engaging Communities: Lessons Learned

This report explores the question of how an organization whose core mission is to protect artists from external demands so that they can accomplish their basic work can at the same time be a full participant in a local community. Often the greatest obstacle to meeting this challenge is finding other models for success, in a field where a one-size-fits-all philosophy falls woefully short of addressing complex organizational needs. The report documents some successful practices within the field, while also sharing the challenges faced by artists’ communities along the path to success.

Five case studies are presented, along with a “Lessons Learned” section that highlights specific ideas that inform community engagement practices. The report also includes new research exploring artists’ perspectives on participating in public programs as part of a residency.

Case study sites include: Abrons Arts Center / Henry Street Settlement, Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts, John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Project Row Houses, Ucross Foundation; with additional research and interviews from another eight programs.
