Director of Artist Services | Powerhouse Workshop (Gowanus, NY)

Type: Full-Time, Permanent

Job Description: Director of Artist Services

Powerhouse Workshop is a contemporary arts center and art fabrication facility established to serve the needs of working artists. Scheduled to open in 2020, the Powerhouse Workshop will provide industrial fabrication shops, a materials library, and flexible space for exhibitions, installations and public programs—supporting investigation, experimentation, and collaboration across media and disciplines.

Powerhouse is seeking a Director of Artist Services to join the executive team of this vibrant new cultural center and lead the development and management of its services and programs for artists. Central to the role is the development and management of the fabrication expertise and capabilities that are core to PW’s mission. The Director of Artist Services will play a key role in shaping the future of the institution and its relationship with artists.

The Director of Artists Services will report to the Executive Director, and will work closely with executive staff, artists and shop directors. S/he will manage a staff of production coordinators and will be responsible for overseeing the PW fabrication shops in wood, metal, ceramics, textiles, mold making, printmaking, and digital fabrication. The Director of Artists Services will drive and support the ongoing development of the fabrication programs, services and resources available to artists and will be responsible for the implementation and ongoing evaluation of the delivery of artist services.

The role of the Director of Artist Services will evolve as the Powerhouse project develops. Candidates should be enthusiastic to participate in this “start-up” environment and should be excited by the opportunity to shape and expand the responsibilities of the position. Current areas of responsibility will include:

Programming – Working with the executive team to develop, implement and manage fabrication programs, capabilities and resources for artists
• Develop and implement a staffing and work plan for Production Coordination with artists
• Build relationships with individual artists, institutions, and galleries
• Define the institution’s artist services and fabrication capabilities based on the specific needs of artists in New York City
• Develop relationships with external partners who have complementary fabrication expertise
• Hire and manage Production Assistants, who will work directly with artists and institutions to coordinate and manage fabrication projects
• Develop and implement Production Coordination internal protocols, as well as guides for artists and institutions working with PW
• Coordinate with the Programming Department to develop opportunities for public engagement in the work of the shops
• Coordinate with the Material Library on the ongoing development of this resource for artists

Shop Planning and Management – Working with the executive team and individual shop directors to define and develop shop capabilities, operations, culture, protocols, and services for both interim shops and future shops in the Gowanus facility
• Develop business planning and modeling for all shops
• Lead the hiring searches and selection for shop directors and partners
• Establish performance goals that will be used to guide the creation of all shops
• Identify projects and artist collaborations to pursue
• Establish and implement protocols for purchasing, maintaining and replacing equipment
• Establish and implement protocols and standards for workshop organization and safety
• Work collaboratively with all shop directors to ensure they have resources and support
• Work with executive staff to coordinate the work of the shops with other aspects of the institution

Qualifications
• Strong command of art fabrication practices
• Coherence in equipment sourcing, maintenance and budgeting
• Experience working with artists, galleries, and fabricators
• Able to work effectively both independently and as a part of a team
• Flexible, creative, resourceful, and able to solve problems
• 10+ years of relevant work experience
• Qualified candidates of diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply
