Director, Boston Circus Guild Presents: Cirque of the Dead | Boston Circus Guild (Boston, MA)

Are you an experienced director with a love for dynamic and exciting productions?

Are you organized, good with people, and great at managing deadlines?

Does the idea of working with a professional circus intrigue you?

Job Title: Director, Boston Circus Guild Presents: Cirque of the Dead

The Director works with the cast and crew to provide feedback and direction on individual circus acts for our popular annual horror-themed show. We have a proud tradition of professional circus performance that emphasizes the relationship between performer, story, and audience. Potential directing candidates are encouraged to consider the advantages and limitations of working with variety-style circus acts, and should have experience in theater direction. Circus direction is not required, but is preferred. The candidate must have a history of working on productions with collaborative artistic vision and be willing to work with performers on collaborative creative development.

Job responsibilities include:

  • Using the call for submissions created by the Production Committee, work with the Circus Director to cast acts for the production
  • Working closely and collaboratively with the show’s writer to craft the artistic direction of the show
  • Collaboration with production team to ensure artistic vision is interpreted in rehearsals with performers
  • Working closely with the Production Manager to organize and schedule individual act rehearsals and rehearsals with the show’s MC
  • Attending at least two individual performer rehearsals for each act to offer direction on content and choreography
  • Working with the MC/Host to develop theme appropriate character for hosting spots between acts and group scenes
  • Attending production meetings and rehearsals which include, but are not limited to individual rehearsals for every act in the show.
  • Attending the following:
    - Two full cast rehearsals: TBD, tentatively scheduled for 9/15 and 10/14
    - Two tech days: TBD, tentatively scheduled for 10/17 and 10/18
    - Performance 1: Friday October 19th and provide notes to the performers, as needed

Time Commitment
We anticipate this position starting in early April and ramping up in time commitment as the show dates become closer. We estimate the position will be roughly 125 hours total for the course of the run.

A flat fee of $2,000 for the work completed, plus share in the profits of the production if it exceeds net expenses. This position is funded from the production budget of the show, as such it doesn’t pay out until after the show goes up.
