Director | Loghaven Artist Residency (Knoxville, TN)

The Loghaven Artist Residency supports artists of excellence through an inclusive residency program while preserving Loghaven’s inspiring natural and built environments. Loghaven is a unique historic site and a 100-acre woodland oasis fifteen minutes from downtown Knoxville. The Aslan Foundation saved this site from redevelopment in 2008 and will open it as an artist residency in 2019. The residency is built on the belief that the cultivation of new art and ideas is critical to human progress. The Loghaven Artist Residency will serve musicians, writers, performers, and visual artists from around the world in its five historic cabins and state-of-the-art gateway building. The residency is one of the Aslan Foundation’s charitable projects in furtherance of the Foundation’s mission of preserving beauty, advancing livability, and supporting cultural assets in Knoxville, Tennessee.

The Loghaven Artist Residency Director manages all aspects of the residency in close partnership with the Aslan Foundation Executive Director. The Director is responsible for building long-term relationships with artists to advance new art and ideas while preserving Loghaven’s natural and built environments.  In addition to leading the residency, the Loghaven Artist Residency Director will act as an ambassador for the residency, representing the program to national and international stakeholders as well as local partners.

  • Plan the delivery and execution of the Loghaven Artist Residency in line with the mission and goals of the organization.
  • Support and nurture the artistic and professional development of each artist-in-residence. This focus on the relationship with the artist should begin with the identification of high-caliber international, national, and regional artists to apply for the residency. The relationship with the artists continues through support during the application process and the residency. The relationship is then ongoing through the creation of a strong alumni program.
  • Manage the residency application process through relationship building with high quality selection panelists and efficient procedures.
  • Establish ambitious short and long-term residency goals and tracking procedures to measure individual artist’s residency impact and overall program achievements.
  • Manage and develop partnerships that support the goals of the residency.
  • Act as an ambassador for the program through travel to interact with national and international stakeholders.
  • Liaison with local Loghaven Artist Residency partners and strengthen relationships within the South Knoxville community.
  • Create annual marketing plan and work with contractors as needed to develop and implement artist engagement strategies.
  • Oversee the Loghaven Prize program including artist selection, project management, and audience engagement.
  • Responsible for the overall vision and implementation of annual open house and artist-requested public programming as appropriate.
  • Work with the Property Manager to serve artists while preserving Loghaven’s historic buildings and woodlands. Residency Director must have the ability to hike one to two miles at a time and traverse steep slopes.
  • Develop, manage and be accountable for clear program budgets, actively monitoring expenditure and reviewing variances where they arise.

Please note: Salary range is based on compensation surveys from the residency field and benefits include medical, life, and retirement.
