Director | Surf Point Foundation (York, ME)

The Surf Point Foundation will be a sanctuary where artists, architects, critics and scholars
focused on the visual arts can create, experiment, develop and learn, inspired by the beauty of
the Maine coast and creative isolation that Surf Point makes possible. It will be a community of
ideas, where exchange of ideas and criticism among peers spurs growth of capacities and skills.
It will also be a place where artists share their work with the public in Maine, as a signal of the
foundation’s commitment to its role in the state.

Located in York, Maine on 46 acres on the rocky windswept coast of the open ocean, it will
occupy two large homes, planned to be repurposed as artists’/writers’ studios.

Job Description:

The director of the foundation will serve as the executive officer of the foundation
with the responsibility to realize the mission of the foundation. In collaboration with the board,
the director will translate the mission into practical reality. To support the activities of the
foundation, the director will solicit financial support for the purposes of the foundation, from
individuals, foundations, corporations, and governmental entities, providing a major fraction of
the foundation’s annual operating expenses. The director will be the principal public voice of the
foundation, broadening public awareness in the arts communities of the nation, particularly
New England, among artists, scholars, and critics, among donors and among the broader public
whose lives are enriched by the arts. The director will manage the financial, administrative and
human resources of the foundation as well as the physical plant. The director will establish
processes for soliciting nominations/applications for residency and processes for their
evaluation. The director will create and maintain the cultural environment of Surf Point,
establishing a sense of excellence and seriousness of purpose, of support for the artists and
their work, assuring a respectful community as well as individual contributions to it. The
director will support the progress of the residents as they realize their stated artistic goals and
will assure that the products of their residencies are shared with the public. In support of the
board, the director will carry out their policies and directives and will report regularly to them
about financial and administrative issues, the accomplishments of the residents during their
stays, and progress to identify new residents.

The director will bring a powerful vision, strong and proven leadership skills, and demonstrated
experience in fund-raising, communications, public relations and marketing. The director will
