Each year, in addition to its Annual Conference, the Alliance hosts two smaller meetings that focus on a particular theme, region, or professional development need.
The Institute series includes the Emerging Program Institute, designed to address the needs of new residency programs, and the Leadership Institute, supporting arts administrators in their professional and personal development as leaders of the field. The Institutes alternate every other year and are generally held in late Winter.
Rocky Mountain / Southwest Regional Meeting
A small but steadfast group converged at Anderson Ranch Arts Center for two days of camaraderie and problem-solving, amidst the gorgeous sunshine and mountain views of Snowmass Village, Colorado. The group was treated to a
Northeast Regional Meeting
Nearly 50 attendees gathered for the Alliance’s meeting in New York City, beginning with an opening night reception at the Studio Museum in Harlem, followed by two days of seminars, roundtable discussions, and tours at the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council.
California / Hawaii Regional Meeting
Nearly 20 leaders from new, emerging, and established residency programs gathered at 18th Street Arts Center in Santa Monica. The conversations included some practical tips on working with artists from outside the U.S., consortium funding for the field, and “Artists’ Communities in International Society,” led by Michelle Satter of the Sundance Institute.
Midwest Regional Meeting
Whether attending the lively discussions, studio tour, or gallery opening at Bemis Center for the Contemporary Arts; touring KANEKO, Omaha’s newest museum, and Jun Kaneko’s studio; or strolling through the Old Market district, the attendees enjoyed Midwestern hospitality and congeniality. The discussions ranged from a panel on building successful partnerships, a thoughtful dialogue on balancing regionalism/provincialism with a desire for greater visibility nationally, and a workshop on establishing a dynamic identity.
Southeast Regional Meeting
The Alliance’s first Southeast Regional Meeting was held at Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts. Brought together by great conversations and good Southern cooking, the group tackled issues of developing an organizational brand, addressing artists’ expectations, and communicating to the public. One of the meeting’s highlights was an Open Studios Tour by Arrowmont’s artists-in-residence, who generously opened their home and workspaces to the attendees.
