As a member of the Alliance, I’m regularly reminded of the passion and idealism motivating the members. There is a wealth of insight to be gained by paying attention to the great diversity of programs organized to achieve this end. The enthusiasm generated by this network is greater than the sum of its parts—it is a profound experience to get together with others who take it for granted that creative artists should be honored and supported in their work while they’re alive.

Emergency Preparedness for Artists

Saturday, November 14, 2009 - 3:00pm
New Orleans
Ogden Museum of Southern Art

After a disaster most people focus on what they have lost and how to get it back. Artists want to know what they can get from the experience that will inform their work and help them grow as artists.

Mel Andringa, Co-Director, LegionArts, Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Cornelia Carey and Craig Nutt of Craft Emergency Relief Fund (CERF) will discuss their trips to post-Katrina New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast to meet with artists and how those experiences helped to inspire the creation of the first emergency preparedness and recovery toolkit for artists, the Studio Protector. Cornelia and Craig will be joined by artists from the region who will share their recollections and how their experience with Hurricane Katrina informed their work and their lives as artists. This event will celebrate the community of artists on the Gulf Coast and the national release of the Studio Protector.

Presented in partnership with the CERF, the Alliance of Artists Communities, and the Arts Council of New Orleans.

Free and open to the public

Location: Ogden Museum of Southern Art (925 Camp Street)

There will be a reception immediately following the session, 5:00 - 6:30 pm, at the Ogden Museum
