Bemis Announces Chris Cook as Executive Director

The Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts announced the appointment of Christopher Cook as their new Executive Director.

Most recently the Executive Director of Cannonball, a non-profit arts organization dedicated to supporting artists through an international live/work residency program and critical discourse surrounding contemporary art practice in Miami, Florida, Chris Cook will join Bemis on October 1st.

During the past three decades, nearly 700 artists-in-residence have called the Bemis Center home, participating in global conversations at the forefront of contemporary culture. Today, the Bemis Center remains an artist-centered organization whose sole mission is to support contemporary artists of exceptional talent. That fundamental value is why we perpetually strive to give the institution to artists, empowering them to become vibrant social, cultural and economic transformers.

The Bemis Executive Director search committee was led by Bemis board member Bob Culver and included additional board members, community leaders and Bemis staff members. The extensive 3-month search process resulted in candidates from all over the world. “Chris stood out as the most qualified candidate in all areas, especially in his experience leading a residency program. We are confident he has the knowledge, passion and leadership skills to take the Bemis to the next level,” Culver said.

“The Bemis has an international reputation for supporting and challenging artists. I could not be more thrilled to become the next Executive Director. I look forward to working with the board and staff of this innovative organization, the artists-in-residence, and the local community.  I am especially excited about the many opportunities for the Bemis to contribute to the cultural ecosystem of the Omaha area,” Cook said.
