Bronze Sculptor Susan Cronin to Chair Vermont Studio Center Board

The Vermont Studio Center (VSC) is pleased to welcome Susan Read Cronin to her new role as Chair of the Board of Trustees. Ms. Cronin will replace Frederick Osborne, one of VSC’s founders.

Founded in 1984 and located in the heart of Johnson, Vermont, The Vermont Studio Center has grown to become the largest international artists' and writers' residency program in the United States. Its mission is to provide studio residencies in an inclusive, international community, honoring creative work as the communication of spirit through form.

The VSC board is comprised of distinguished artists & writers, patrons, and non-profit leaders. "I am fortunate to have the support of such a talented and diverse group of people guiding our organization into the future. We are excited to have Susie as our new chair,” said VSC President Gary Clark.

Ms. Cronin, a bronze sculptor who has studios in Manchester, VT and Santa Barbara, CA, has served on the VSC board since 2002, most recently as Vice Chair and head of the Trusteeship Committee. “I am honored to have been chosen for this new role and am looking forward to leading VSC into its post-founder stage,” said Ms. Cronin.

Her show of bronze sculptures, entitled Fables, Foibles and Fairytales, has traveled to eighteen museums around the country and her pieces are held in numerous private and public collections on the Eastern seaboard. One of her 6' elephants was installed in 2013 at Johnson State College in Johnson, Vermont and two other of her 7’ bronze elephants now populate the Brattleboro Retreat in Brattleboro, VT.

Speaking of her involvement at VSC, Ms. Cronin stated: “I know the value of a month-long residency at VSC, having done many of them myself. I was always able to get a year’s worth of work done in that one month. VSC provided me uninterrupted studio time, a place to lay my head at night and delicious food. However, it was the conversations in the dining room with artists and writers from around the world that really sustained me and helped me think about my art making in new ways.

“The experience I have had serving on the board for the past thirteen years has been just as valuable. The quality of thinking, dedication to mission and enthusiasm for the organization are contagious amongst our group. The VSC Board is a community
of individuals with whom I deeply resonate and learn from.”

Susan Read Cronin is a graduate of The Madeira School in McLean, VA and received a BA from Williams College in Williamstown, MA. Besides her artistic endeavors, she also serves as a Director at Manchester Capital Management in Manchester, VT. She has served on the board of Planned Parenthood of Northern New England and is currently on the Advisory Board of Nomadicare, based in Middlebury, VT.
