"Creative Placemaking" Makes the Case for Arts-Based Community Development

With 14 case studies - from dense urban neighborhoods to small rural towns - "Creative Placemaking" chronicles how local artists, activists, government leaders, and everyday citizens are reimagining their communities through the arts.

The report - authored by Ann Markusen and Anne Gadwa - was recently released as a white paper for The Mayor's Institute on City Design, a leadership initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the United States Conference of Mayors and American Architectural Foundation. Creative Placemaking "investigates the challenges, catalysts, and successful ingredients for public/private partnerships." And while widespread "policy frameworks and networking around creative placemaking have yet to be built" the report lays the foundation for future initiatives that can be adapted by other communities.
