Zygote Executive Director to Start A New Chapter

“As a co-founder of Zygote Press and its devoted champion, this was a tough decision. However, this is right time for me to begin a new chapter. It has been an honor to be a part of building such a dynamic organization. I look forward to witnessing even greater accomplishments from Zygote Press in the future,” says Maugans.

Liz Maugans, current Executive Director of the nonprofit artist workshop Zygote Press, is stepping down.

Zygote was founded in 1996 and Maugans has served as Executive Director for 12 years. Zygote was established as an open, collaborative shop — to give artist printmakers affordable access to facilities.

During her tenure, Maugans grew Zygote Press from a small community of artists to launching more than 300 on and offsite exhibitions and 1,200 public events including lectures, workshops, panels, film screenings, book launches, and discussions. Under Maugans’ leadership Zygote became an incubator for creativity and cultural exchange, launching the Collective Arts Network journal and hosted, as well as exchanged, almost 100 artist residents from all over the world from Albania to Zimbabwe.

Maugans, along with her Zygote co-founder Bellamy Printz, was given the Martha Joseph Prize for Distinguished Service from the Cleveland Arts Prize in 2012. Maugans is an accomplished artist and has received both the Ohio Arts Council Individual Artist fellowship and a Creative Workforce Fellowship from Cuyahoga Arts and Culture.

Maugans will remain in her role until a new executive director is named.
