The Banff Centre | Banff, Alberta (Canada)

*Please note: Fellows must have a valid passport in order to travel from the U.S. to Canada

Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity offers professional artists an opportunity for concentrated work in an exceptional environment. The Centre hosts hundreds of concerts, openings, exhibitions, and performances every year. Exceptional artists and leaders from around the world create and perform new works of art; share skills and knowledge in an interdisciplinary environment; and explore ideas and develop solutions in the arts and leadership. The Leighton Artists’ Studios offers artist residencies in a secluded wooded area within The Banff Centre campus.

Location: Set amid the spectacular backdrop of the Canadian Rockies, The Leighton Artists’ Studios provides a quiet and secluded wooded setting for its 8 studios, with thoughtfully designed interiors and serene forest views to create an ideal space for creativity and intense productivity. The Banff Centre is located in Banff National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, 90 minutes from Calgary. The spectacular beauty of the Canadian Rockies surrounds the campus spread over 43 acres of land on the west side of Tunnel Mountain and just a few blocks from downtown Banff.

Residency length: 1 month minimum stay; residencies of up to 6 weeks available for Pew Fellows

Average # of artists in-residence at a time: 8 in the Leighton Artists’ Studios; up to 400 in all the Centre’s residency programs

Housing: Private housing (hotel-style room with private bath)

Studios + other facilities: Private architecturally-designed studio in the Leighton Artists’ Studios (3 equipped with grand pianos, 2 designed for visual artists, and 3 for writers). Entire campus is equipped with wireless internet. Additional facilities are available in film/media, photography, sculpture, printmaking, music, theater, and dance.

Meals: All meals provided (artists are provided a full meal plan for chef-created meals at the on-site dining facilities); Leighton Studios are equipped with kitchenettes and 2-piece bathrooms.

Accessibility: Housing, common spaces, and studios situated in all major buildings are accessible; the Leighton Artist Studios, a secluded enclave of 8 studios in the forest, as well as the mountainous terrain, are difficult to navigate by wheelchair.

Presenting opportunities + public engagement: Artists in the Leighton Artists’ Studios may choose to host an Open Studio. Artists may be asked to make a presentation to a group of artists in one of the Centre’s programs, at the discretion of the artist in residence and the director of the relevant program. There are ample opportunities to show work to other artists in residence as well as to the public, if that is desired.

Other services: In addition to the physical facilities, the Centre provides technical/production support; requirement for technical assistance is assessed at the time the application is received. All residents also have access to all common spaces such as pool and exercise facility, the library and archives, restaurants, and the Walter Phillips Gallery. Residents can also get tickets to the 400+ concerts, performances, and readings The Banff Centre presents each year.
