Ucross Foundation

Ucross provides residencies for individuals whose work indicates both involvement in individual creative exploration and significant future accomplishments. Writers, visual artists, composers, scholars and scientists working in all disciplines and from all stages of their professional careers are invited to apply.

Location: Ucross is located on a 20,000-acre working cattle ranch on the High Plains of northeast Wyoming, near the Bighorn Mountains, 30 miles southeast of Sheridan.

Residency length: 4-6 weeks

Average # of artists in-residence at a time: 9

Housing: Private room, shared bath in two 4-bedroom buildings next to each other – The School House and The Depot, plus one separate live-in composer studio.

Studios + other facilities: Private studios. Performance/dance space available in spacious, renovated Barn Loft with a grand piano; 2 composer’s cabins, each with a baby grand piano and electronic keyboard; 4 visual arts studios each have over 450 sq. ft. of space; Elephant etching press; and 4 writer’s studios. Two writer’s studios are near housing and dining facilities; other studios are a 10-minute walk from housing.

Meals: Lunch and dinner are prepared by a professional chef, Monday-Friday; residents prepare own meals for breakfast and on weekends in The School House’s fully-equipped kitchen.

Accessibility: Housing, studios, and common spaces are accessible; there is some distance between housing and studio buildings which requires transportation or walking.

Presenting opportunities + public engagement: There are no requirements of Ucross artists-in-residence. Some artists are interested in sharing work and staff will help to facilitate that whenever desired and appropriate.

Other services: Ucross provides airport pickups in Sheridan, WY, and weekly town trips.
