It is hard to explain what it feels like to know that when you get up in the morning you can just sit and write — a journal, poetry, prose — all day long until you are too tired to pick up a pencil or sit at a keyboard, until your ability to put words together cohesively slips from your fingers — not from the fatigue of a long day at a job but from a long day of words bumping up against each other as they struggle to get from your brain to the page.

Artists Communities at Work: Lessons Learned
January 2003
The first in the “Lessons Learned” series addresses three critical issues in the field of artists’ communities: Fund Development, Building Community Within, and Community Engagement/Outreach. The report includes case studies of six artists’ communities, detailing the programs, fundraising ideas, and creative environments that have enabled them to thrive. In addition, the report gives a detailed and thought-provoking analysis of a membership-wide survey on community engagement – the challenges and opportunities it presents, and a vision for the future. Dear friends of the Alliance,
I’ve seen a lot of funding appeals in the last few months talking about how dire things are and how desperately your support is needed. This is not one of those appeals. What I’ve also seen a lot of lately is abundance – an abundance of personal involvement in civic life; a wealth of understanding about what artists of all kinds add to our world; a rich desire to participate in creativity and art-making; an investment in those things that offer meaning and relevance in chaotic, consumer-saturated lives. |

What role will artists, scientists, thinkers and visionary citizens play in building the communities of the future? Organized by the Alliance of Artists Communities and hosted by the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the “Future of Creativity” symposium brought together some of the nation’s leading thinkers to present a range of models of innovative, sustainable communities. Symposium speakers and panelists included Carol Becker, Stanley Crouch, Kahil El’Zabar, Guillermo Gómez-Peña, Dr. Clifford A. Jones, Sr., Bill Joy, T. Allan Comp, Monica Haslip, Ruby Lerner, Chris Quigg, Alan Weisman and Street-Level Youth Media, among others. The book is a narrative report of the proceedings. Learn More |
