Artist in Wilderness | Wilderness Workshop

Non-member

Since 2008, the Artist in Wilderness program has offered one-week residencies to allow artists to make works inspired by the lands that Wilderness Workshop is working to protect.

Artist in Wilderness residents are provided with housing, a guide as required, a $1,500 stipend, and reimbursement for travel to/from Aspen up to $1,000 ($400 for Colorado residents). Artists are responsible for their own food, equipment and materials. Good health and endurance are essential.

Artists are expected to use their residency to derive inspiration from and make art in the White River National Forest or nearby federal public lands. They are asked to donate to the Wilderness Workshop one original work made during the residency or inspired by it, and to license certain reproduction rights to other works from the residency to allow WW to raise funds for the program.

The application deadline for the 2014-15 residencies is June 15, 2014. Professional artists working in any medium of painting or drawing are welcome to apply. Two residencies will be held in the fall of 2014, and two will be held in early summer of 2015.

The nonprofit Wilderness Workshop has played a key role in permanently protecting more than 400,000 acres of wildlands in the Central Mountains of Colorado. The organization continues to defend this landscape, which includes some of America’s most iconic vistas. Artist in Wilderness residents are given the opportunity to practice their art in the places that WW is working to protect.
