Athena Standards Residency

The Athena Standards residency program provides the artists with an open format studio space in a re-purposed commercial building, located in a bustling neighborhood of coffee shops, bars and restaurants and conveniently situated next to the Kato Patissia Metro stop. The studio boasts abundant natural light, and includes such amenities as a communal workspace/ woodshop, storage for works in progress, a kitchenette and lounge, keypad access and a security guard in the evenings, as well as a studio manager to provide assistance five days per week.

Artists are provided shared housing with other residency artists in apartments around Athens, in proximity to the studio premises. We are pleased to be able to offer the support of our staff, in acquainting the artists with their surroundings and giving advice on everything from locating art supplies to grocery stores, the local nightlife and negotiating the Metro system.

Integrally, professional development opportunities abound throughout the residency program. It is our mission to allow for the exchange of ideas and to provide for the opportunity to form lasting professional relationships with international colleagues. Athena Standards’ in-house art historian and curator, Elizabeth Plessa, will be visiting the studios of the resident artists regularly to discuss the progress of their work.

The residency session lasts a minimum of one month. However, we encourage residents to consider staying for two months or longer, in order to develop a deeper knowledge of the city. We open all sessions within the year to applications, and reviews of applicants are conducted on a monthly basis. Athena Standards Residency is closed for the month of August each year. We are able to accommodate 12 artists per residency session.

Athens: Greece

Athena Standards Residency was born of the idea that the city of Athens offers an unparalleled opportunity to experience simultaneously the vibrant urban culture of a contemporary city and the rich history of an ancient cosmopolitan center. documenta 14 put the city of Athens on the map of the contemporary art scene, and as a result there has been an influx of art practitioners to Athens. The city continues to be an artistic hub, welcoming people from all over the world, who have found new ground to express their ideas. Athens Standards Residency was initiated in response to the need for dedicated space and community, in order to carry forth in the vein of cultural production and exchange. With the intention of creating a network of international and local artists, the residency program aims to encourage a dialogue with the local art scene.

Additional expectations / opportunities

Based on the events currently happening in Athens; visiting artist talks, VIP entry to art fairs such as the annual Art Athina, and group outings to art openings and museum shows, have been organized so that by the end of their stay in Athens the ASR residents will have experienced a comprehensive consultancy regarding their practice. Residency members may also organize open studio days, performances, installations or exhibitions, which ASR is pleased to support and promote. At this juncture we also have the unique ability to be able to offer artists-in-residence the opportunity to curate and/or collaborate on a pop-up exhibition on one of the floors of our building that has yet to be renovated. With the same footprint as the studio floor, it is approximately 4200 square feet of raw space, formerly office space. Artists may put together performances, installations or screenings, working under the guidance of the Studio Manager and Program Director.
