The facility under construction: 10/12

Avaloch Farm Music Institute

Emerging Program member

Opening in Boscawen, NH in August, 2013, AFMI will provide a unique opportunity for chamber music ensembles at all stages of development to have the time and insulated environment to work intensively on repertoire, prepare for recordings, concerts, and competitions, and forge or reconnect to a group musical identity. Informal concerts will take place on site, and there will be outreach to the surrounding community, as well as collaborations with other arts institutions in the area. In addition, Avaloch Farm intends to provide a setting for arts and educational organizations to meet, and thereby become a recognized hub of cultural presence in central New Hampshire.

The Residence Hall appears as a converted barn and will house 20 ‘Fellows’ in private bedrooms with the option for occupancy by couples. The bedrooms will be sound-proofed to make them suitable for private practice. Each ensemble will have its own studio in which to work. The studios will be spacious and will include a sitting area as well as ample rehearsal room. Each studio will be acoustically insulated and will be climate controlled. Four of the studios are indoors and three set in the woods. At least two of the studios will have pianos, and a third piano will be situated in the Common Room.
The main common area is situated in a Center wing, which includes the kitchen and dining facilities. This social space for meals and informal gatherings will also be the site for informal concerts for invited guests and other residents of AFMI. This central wing is designed to look like a New England farm house, complete with a beautiful porch overlooking the agricultural landscape.
Three meals a day will be served in the dining room, and there will be small refrigerators for personal use in the residence facility. There will be a laundry room as well as a fitness room for use by all
participants. Acres of land and a beautiful lake will be available for reflection and recreation.
The charming residential facility, useful, comfortable studios, pleasant dining area and Common Room, all enhanced by the beautiful, bucolic surroundings, will make a residency at Avaloch Farm a fulfilling and treasured opportunity. AFMI joins the rich tradition of American institutions created to support the inspiration and vision of our artists. At long last, musicians will have their own such institution.

Location

Boscawen, New Hampshire: United States

Boscawen, NH is a rural and agricultural town, 10 miles north of Concord, NH. The physical facility has been planned as a ‘converted’ farm, with three linked buildings set in a large pasture that abuts wetlands, another large farm, and forests. Placed on a dirt country road, the immediate impression of rural tranquility has been designed to set the visitors at ease. The construction of this $3 million facility (begun in July 2012) has been designed to address the particular needs of musicians in keeping with the agricultural and rural nature of the surroundings.
