David Barr Legacy Artist Residencies

Inspired by the work of artist, writer, and educator David Barr, Michigan Legacy Art Park and Villa Barr are collaborating to provide artists with the time, space, support, and inspiration they need to further their creative work.

Applications are now being accepted. Special consideration is given to sculptors, environmental artists, and writers. For residency details and to apply, visit our website:

Reflecting the work of artist David Barr, these residencies offer opportunities for artists interested in nature, health, philosophy, science, math, education, research, or the Michigan experience.

Located at two different sites in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, from the urban southeast (Villa Barr) to the forested northwest (MLAP), each location offers distinct resources, amenities, and programming.

As the resident artist at either location, the artist shall create and exhibit their artwork and share their knowledge and vision with the public through ancillary educational/community services deemed appropriate by the artist and the host.
