Gell Residency for Writers with Children

Writers & Books, the premier independent literary center in Rochester, NY offers a one-week writing residency to three writers with young children.  Writers can choose our urban location, located in Rochester’s Neighborhood of the Arts—which includes tuition for accompanying children to attend Writers & Books SummerWrite camp program (ages 6-18) — or our rural facility, Gell: A Finger Lakes Creative Retreat, located in scenic South Bristol, NY (about 45 minutes south of Rochester) on 24 acres of gorgeous woodland. Lodging is included for up to a one-week stay.  Each writer, their children, and one other adult will be reimbursed up to $1,000 for travel and food expenses for the week. This residency is funded in part by the Sustainable Arts Foundation.

Gell: A Finger Lakes Creative Retreat - is Writers & Books' retreat located in the picturesque Finger Lakes Wine Region thirty miles south of Rochester. Nestled in the hills by a stream, Gell has a range of accommodations that provide a quiet and peaceful setting for writers & artists looking for creative solitude as well as groups and businesses seeking the ideal venue for social interaction. Gell has hosted, in addition to individual writers and writing classes, artists, yoga groups and book groups, business meetings, and weddings.

Eligibility

  • Additional eligibility information: 

    Applicants must submit 15-20 pages of the manuscript they’re working on, along with a statement indicating how they will use the residency, who will accompany them, ages of child (or children), and which facility they are interested in. Applications must be submitted by: January 31st, 2017. The residency awards will be announced by March 1st, 2017 and will take place between April – August 2017. Dates will be negotiated after acceptance. Submissions and questions should be sent to kathyp@wab.org.

Facilities & Services

  • Housing: Private bedroom in a shared housing facility
    Two bedroom suites with the kitchen and dining area as the common space in the Gell House.
  • Meals: No meals/food provided
    This grant covers the cost of food, however the resident will prepare food themselves.
  • Computer/internet access: Wireless Internet
  • Companions: Spouses/partners allowed for full stay, Children allowed for full stay
    For this specific Sustainable Arts Grant which is for Writers with Children, and are welcome to bring the entire family.
  • Accessibility: no
