The Horned Dorset Colony

Emerging Program member

Emerging and professional artists working in the fields of writing, literary translation, musical composition, architectural design, visual arts and interdisciplinary arts are eligible to apply for a four-week residency in the rural town of Leonardsville, located in central New York State.

The founders have graduate degrees in the arts and they have donated multiple houses and 250 acres of land to advance the Colony's mission and insure its future growth. They also own The Horned Dorset Inn, a long-established and successful inn and restaurant which provides the Colony with a dining facility as well as an elegant venue for fundraising events, exhibitions and cultural engagement with the public.

The Horned Dorset Colony offers 3 sessions in 2019:
SESSION I June 6 - July 1
SESSION II July 5 - July 30
SESSION III September 5 - September 30

Application can be made at any time, but the 2019 deadline is February 22. There is no application fee. Upon acceptance, a non-refundable$500 deposit will be required of ALL residents, regardless of financial support.

Residents are selected primarily on the basis of artistic merit, with consideration given to stylistic and geographic diversity. Applications are reviewed by an outside panel of professionals and the directors and should be made on-line.

Anyone considering application should begin by sending a brief "Letter of Introduction" by email to hdcolony@gmail.com. This email should include:
1. Your full name and current address
2. The session you wish to attend
3. A brief description of the work you wish to accomplish
4. Links to your website, recent reviews of your work, URL's such as Vimeo, YouTube, or SoundCloud

IN MOST CASES, VERY LITTLE MORE WILL BE REQUIRED TO MAKE APPLICATION
The Director will then respond to your email with suggestions on how to proceed.

"Horned Dorset Colony provides a deep and profound caring for the arts and the artists."
Joellyn Duesberry, 2012 Resident Artist
