Joan Mitchell Center

Joan Mitchell Center’s Artist-in-Residence program offers space and time for artists to create work in a contemplative environment, focusing on the transformative possibilities of a residency experience. In an expansive space, artists can explore new mediums and ideas over a period of one to three months. While staying in the Center’s lodging in the historic Faubourg Tremé neighborhood, artists are ideally situated to access the myriad and unique stimuli of a historically dense city.

In addition to this core residency, our second phase of programming offers two additional elements to provide options for project-based studio practices, and a commitment to engage emerging local artists. The Artist-in-Residence Program provides these areas of focus to address the needs of specific career points and practices

Community Engaged Artist-in-Residence

The Community Engaged Artist-in-Residence program assists artists in developing relationships with a variety of communities and fosters direct, reciprocal relationships between resident artists and local community members and organizations. Based on a specific project proposal, artists will have a dedicated studio while staying at the Center for a period of one or three months.

Emerging Artist-in-Residence

The Emerging Artist-in-Residence program will provide New Orleans-based artists dedicated studios for five months in concert with robust professional development support, through one-on-one studio visits with local and national curators, critics and arts professionals. Intended as a transformative opportunity for New Orleans artists without adequate studio space, this residency fosters long-lasting relationships and advocacy for emerging artists.
