Mesa Refuge

The Mesa Refuge offers two-week residencies to emerging and established writers and other creatives focused on innovative thinking in the areas of nature, human economy and social equity.

The Mesa Refuge was founded in 1997 by Peter Barnes to support writers addressing the compelling issues of our time. Since then, more than 600 residents have allowed the magic of this place–at the edge of the natural and human worlds–to inspire innovative thinking and writing.

Using the gift of space and time provided here, Mesa Refuge writers such as Michael Pollan, Terry Tempest Williams, Van Jones, Rebecca Solnit, Raj Patel and Krista Tippett stir essential discourses that ripple far beyond the Mesa Refuge.

Complete application information can be found online at our website:

Point Reyes Station, California: United States

The Mesa Refuge is located on a bluff overlooking Tomales Bay and restored wetlands. It sits at the edge of the San Andreas Fault, on the periphery of a great city, at a spot where urban civilization adjoins agriculture and wilderness. This is an ideal place for contemplation. The town of Point Reyes Station is a 10-minute walk away.
