San Diego Art Institute

Emerging Program member

The San Diego Art Institute is now accepting applications for our next artist-in-residence. Artists at any stage of their career are encouraged to apply now for a 3-month residency running from April through June 2016. The selected artist will receive a private 150 sq. ft. studio/project space, and 300 sq. ft. shared work space at San Diego Art Institute in Balboa Park to create new work. The residency culminates in a solo presentation of work in June 2016 in SDAI’s Balboa Park Project space. There is also an expanded opportunity to present work and have studio space in SDAI’s new 2,500 sq. ft. Project Space at Horton Plaza upon request.

The selected Artist-in-Residence will be required to spend a minimum of 20 hours/week working in their studio, and will be required to give a public lecture and/or workshop during the course of the residency (for which stipends will be offered). During the course of the residency, we will arrange for frequent visits by area curators to the artist’s studio. SDAI’s staff is on-hand to provide technical support and respond to the needs of our Artist-in-Residence.

We offer studio and exhibition space only—we currently do not assist with lodging or travel to/from the residency.

Deadline: January 25, 2016

The San Diego Art Institute (SDAI) was founded in 1941 and has since remained the premier organization showcasing artists from the Southern California/Baja Norte region. Our mission is to develop artists and supporters of the visual arts through exhibition, education, and outreach. We achieve this mission by creating innovative programs that respond to the needs of our members, by offering world-class facilities to exhibit artwork, and by forging partnerships with our local and global community.

SDAI currently operates out of two locations: our main exhibition space in Balboa Park and the San Diego Art Department in North Park which houses our educational programs and artist studios. SDAI showcases rotating exhibitions of artwork in our Balboa Park location every four to six weeks—either a juried, themed or curated exhibition, as well as two solo artist exhibitions. We also host monthly exhibitions in our David G. Fleet Young Artist Gallery, allowing us to acknowledge and showcase the work that is produced in tandem with our Youth Program Department. Additionally, SDAI hosts ongoing professional development lectures and workshops for artists, a semi-weekly life-drawing class open to the public, a number of arts education programs such as “Art Box and “Page to Canvas to Stage”, as well as monthly art events in North Park.
