Signal Culture

Signal Culture's vision is to create an environment where innovative artists, toolmakers, curators, critics, researchers and historians who are contributing to the field of media art will have time and space to make new work and to interact with one another.

Signal Culture offers residencies in a live/work space in the beautiful village of Owego in central New York State. We believe in the importance of fostering a community of people working with experimental media art and host multiple residents concurrently to set a stage for conversation, networking, and possible collaboration. Our facilities include an artist studio, toolmaker studio, and a print and digital media library. Additionally, private bedrooms, shared common areas and other amenities are provided.

Signal Culture is dedicated to producing and distributing resources for use in the field of experimental media art. This includes documentation of media processes and events, producing e-publications, developing tools, distributing media resources and conducting interviews with important artists, toolmakers and curators in the field. The Signal Culture Apps are custom Mac/PC software give artists access to custom professional video and new media software applications for producing real-time experimental media artworks.

Signal Culture supports innovators working in the field of experimental media art by curating works in a variety of galleries, museums and alternative spaces. We have worked with regional cultural centers like the Rochester Contemporary Art Center, the Everson Museum of Art, and the Davis Gallery at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Our goal is to grow our programs to feature international collaborations with museums, galleries, festivals, conferences, public art initiatives and community organizations in order to foster contemporary visions of the role of experimental media as cultural production.
