SPACE on Ryder Farm is located on a 221-year-old working organic farm in Brewster, New York, 90 minutes north of NYC.
Built in 1795, the Ryder Family homestead serves as a home to artists-in-residence during SPACE's season.
The barn at Ryder Farm was built by Will Ryder in 1905. Today, it serves as a performance and rehearsal space.
Now in its third year, SPACE on Ryder Farm supports working parents and their children for a weeklong residency.
Ryder Farm boasts a half-mile of lake front. Residents can frequently be found writing on the dock or paddling around the lake.

SPACE on Ryder Farm

SPACE creates an environment singular in its ability to invigorate artists and innovators and their work, and contributes to the sustainability and resourceful preservation of one of the oldest organic family farms on the East Coast.

In 2017, SPACE is emboldening and recommitting to our belief that inclusion, equity, support and radical hospitality are not only important to creating art, but are vital in creating dialogue that leads to lasting change.

In support of these values, SPACE will:

-Make all individual and small group residences free in 2017.
-Endeavor to grant 50% of our residencies to persons of color and underrepresented voices.
-Double the number of spaces for our fully-subsidized Family Residency, in association with The Lilly Awards.

Applications for all programs are now open through February 7, 2017.

Past Residents & Quotes

"When I'm in residence at SPACE, I write more and better. The fact that it’s beautiful and comfortable certainly helps, but more importantly SPACE puts the artist at the center."
— Sam Hunter, Resident '13 and '14, member of The Working Farm '15
"In a world that is increasingly fast-paced and distracted, it is more and more vital for artists and innovators to have time to slow down and grow something, be it art or a mission statement for their NGO. The individuals and communities we serve value the slower pace and literal and figurative space that Ryder Farm affords them. SPACE asks residents to engage meaningfully with the land, their authentic creative impulses and invites them to dialogue with people who are literally in front of them."
— Emily Simoness, Co-Founder & Executive Director

Facilities & Services

  • Housing: Private bedroom in a shared housing facility
There are two structures that house residents on Ryder Farm. The Ryder Family homestead, The Sycamores, is a beautiful house with an incredible history, dating back to the eighteenth century. It follows, however, that the accommodations are rustic. The second housing structure, Kay Hall was built in 1983. Both houses are equipped with several bathrooms with showers and working plumbing, hot water and beds with clean linens; but if an outdoors-style environment makes you uncomfortable, SPACE may not be the right place for you. We endeavor to give each resident a private bedroom during their time at SPACE but please keep in mind when applying with a larger group that some residents will be sharing rooms. You most likely will be sharing a bathroom with other residents.
  • Meals: All/most meals are provided by organization
All residencies are centered around three farm fresh meals daily.
  • Computer/internet access: Computer and internet connection provided in common area (shared), Wireless Internet
  • Accessibility: no
  • Studios/special equipment: Theater

Residency Fees

Starting in 2017 all individual and small group residencies will be free of charge.

Stipends / other support

Additional expectations / opportunities

Residents are encouraged to participate in the farming, maintenance and building initiatives on Ryder Farm. Since its founding, SPACE team members and resident artists have worked with the farm on the overall maintenance of its structures. If farming is of interest, residents have the opportunity to assist with harvesting and preparing the farm’s organic produce for market, assembling flower bouquets, and/or tilling the land. Given that all individual and small group residences are fully-subsidized this season, we ask that every resident give back and help contribute to the upkeep of the farm for two hours per week.
