SPACE on Ryder Farm is located on a 222-year-old working organic farm in Brewster, New York, 90 minutes north of NYC.
Built in 1795, the Ryder Family homestead serves as a home to artists-in-residence during SPACE's season.
The barn at Ryder Farm was built by Will Ryder in 1905. Today, it serves as a performance and rehearsal space.
Now in its third year, SPACE on Ryder Farm supports working parents and their children for a weeklong residency.
Ryder Farm boasts a half-mile of lake front. Residents can frequently be found writing on the dock or paddling around the lake.

Applications for all programs (except the Season Extension Residency) are due by October 8th, 2018 at 11:59PM EST. Applications for the Season Extension are due by September 10th, 2018 at 11:59PM EST. Additional information and applications are available at www.spaceonryderfarm.org.

SPACE on Ryder Farm provides residents the opportunity to focus on their work away from the stress and noise of everyday life. Residencies at SPACE are self-determined to meet the
needs of each individual resident or group, and are centered around three communal farm-fresh meals each day. Residents are provided housing, meals, artistic support and access to 127 acres of organic farmland. Aligned with SPACE’s core belief that inclusion, equity, support and radical hospitality are not only important to creating art, but are vital in creating dialogue that leads to lasting change, as of 2017, all individual and small group residences are fully subsidized. Additionally, SPACE endeavors to grant at least 50% of residencies to persons of color and underrepresented voices.

Applications for all programs are now open through October 8. 2018.

Past Residents & Quotes

"When I'm in residence at SPACE, I write more and better. The fact that it’s beautiful and comfortable certainly helps, but more importantly SPACE puts the artist at the center."
— Sam Hunter, MacArthur Genius, Resident '13 and '14, member of The Working Farm '15
"In a world that is increasingly fast-paced and distracted, it is more and more vital for artists and innovators to have time to slow down and grow something, be it art or a mission statement for their NGO. The individuals and communities we serve value the slower pace and literal and figurative space that Ryder Farm affords them. SPACE asks residents to engage meaningfully with the land, their authentic creative impulses and invites them to dialogue with people who are literally in front of them."
— Emily Simoness, Co-Founder & Executive Director

Facilities & Services

  • Housing: Private bedroom in a shared housing facility
There are two structures that house residents on Ryder Farm. The Ryder Family homestead, The Sycamores, is a beautiful house with an incredible history, dating back to the eighteenth century. It follows, however, that the accommodations are rustic. The second housing structure, Kay Hall was built in 1983. Both houses are equipped with several bathrooms with showers and working plumbing, hot water and beds with clean linens; but if an outdoors-style environment makes you uncomfortable, SPACE may not be the right place for you. We endeavor to give each resident a private bedroom during their time at SPACE but please keep in mind when applying with a larger group that some residents will be sharing rooms. You most likely will be sharing a bathroom with other residents.
  • Meals: All/most meals are provided by organization
All residencies are centered around three farm fresh meals daily.
  • Computer/internet access: Computer and internet connection provided in common area (shared), Wireless Internet
  • Companions: Children allowed for full stay
Children only allowed at Family Residency. More details here: spaceonryderfarm.org/family-residency
  • Accessibility: no
  • Studios/special equipment: Theater

Residency Fees

All individual and small group residencies will be free of charge.

Stipends / other support

In 2018, SPACE is instituting a travel fund for The Family Residency. Upon acceptance into The Family Residency, and based on your geographical location and financial situation, you may be eligible to apply.

Additional expectations / opportunities

Since SPACE’s founding, SPACE team members, residents and volunteers have played a major role in restoring, enlivening and preserving Ryder Farm’s structures and landscape. Many of these structures are now used as workspaces by SPACE’s resident artists. To keep this tradition going, we ask that all residents give back two hours of their time for each week they are on the farm. This give back can include participating in farming, landscaping, maintenance, building or community initiatives. Residents, for instance, can help with planting or harvesting, assembling flower bouquets for the farmer’s market, cleaning dishes after one of the meals, helping to prep a meal, etc.
