North Adams, Massachusetts: United States

MASS MoCA is one of the world's largest and most renowned contemporary art museums, located in North Adams, Massachusetts, about 3 hours (by car) from Boston and New York. North Adams is a former industrial town of approximately 13,000 residents, nestled in the Berkshire Mountains. The surrounding region has tremendous hiking (the Appalachian Trail goes through North Adams, and there are numerous other trails in the surrounding hills -- Mount Greylock State Reservation, Clarksburg State Forest, Green Mountain National Forest, etc.). Some past residents include: Marion Belanger (www.marionbelanger.com), Donna Cleary (www.donnacleary.net), Brian Gillis (www.gillislab.com), Sue Huang (www.sue-huang.com), Elizabeth Knowles (www.elizabethknowles.com), Linda Stillman (www.lindastillman.com), and Rachel Sussman (www.rachelsussman.com)
The proximity of working in a studio on the campus of MASS MoCA and having access to the museum provides a unique experience unlike any other residency I have attended. My residency week was not only incredibly productive but also refreshing and enlivening to my art making. I loved this experience! The hospitality and administrative aspects were superb.
