Summer Residencies and Programs at Otis College of Art and Design

Summer Residencies and Programs at Otis College of Art and Design offer artists, designers, and curators the opportunity to explore and create work in the unique and culturally diverse arts community of Los Angeles. Our programs engage participants in challenging work alongside peers and colleagues who share the same creative goals and passion. Summer 2018 residencies include traditional residencies in art, design and writing.

Summer Residencies also curates a robust selection of public programming, which will include keynote speakers, panel discussions, and networking opportunities for participants. Please see the below list for 2018's offerings.

Emerging Curators Retreat

Through a series of talks, conversations, and presentations with professional curators, artists, and thinkers, and site visits to museums, galleries, studios, and alternative spaces, participants will be able to engage with the local art community, and advance their careers as curators. This retreat will focus specifically on Los Angeles’ local art scene.

Dates: June 11 – June 23, 2018
Fees: $2,500.00 Fee; $ 350.00 Deposit

Figurative Arts Residency

The Figurative Arts Residency offers artists interested in representational and figurative subjects a unique opportunity to hone skills and advance techniques of image- and form-making through special demonstration workshops, distinguished speakers, stellar Los Angeles venues, and facilitated life drawing sessions

Dates: June 4 – June 29, 2018
Fees: $3,500.00 Fee; $ 350.00 Deposit

L.A. Summer Residency

The L.A. Summer Residency offers artists and designer the opportunity to work side-by-side in an immersive environment within the vibrant art and design community of Los Angeles. Through access to Otis College’s advanced production studios and deep engagement with the Los Angeles contemporary arts community, participants can produce unique work and investigate new ideas. Artist and designers will be hosted at our new housing and dining facilities, minutes from LAX and the Pacific Ocean.

Fashion Design Residency

The Fashion Design Residency is a ten-day residential program for aspiring and active fashion designers to explore the limits of their creativity and design identity. The residency, led by Amy Bond will use a non-traditional approach to fashion design, supported with multimedia presentations, guest speakers, field trips, and more.

SAAS-FEE Summer Institute of Art | LA

The SFSIA is a traveling, nomadic academy that originated in Saas Fee, Switzerland in 2015 and moved to Berlin in 2016. It was founded by fine artist and theorist Warren Neidich, is co-directed by art critic and poet Barry Schwabsky. Sarah Beadle is Director of Administration. It was conceived in 2014 as part of an ongoing effort to engage contemporary artists in political, socio-economic, philosophical and historical discourses concerning the power of art.

Wilderness as Myth

Wilderness as Myth begins with an off-site three-day seminar exploring aesthetic and political uses of the Western United States’ landscape, as preparation for a ten-day trip across the American Southwest, ending amidst stalactites in a cave below Nevada.

Nomadic LA

This two-week intensive explores Los Angeles as a creative community and a cultural center with historians, writers, artists, and designers. From modern to postmodern architectural landmarks including Lloyd Wright, Schindler, Neutra, Eames, and Gehry buildings and projects, the program examines L.A. as a laboratory of art and design.

Dates: June 4 – June 15, 2018
