Torpedo Factory Art Center

The Torpedo Factory Art Center offers opportunities for emerging and established artist from around the world to create, sell, and promote their artwork.

There are approximately 165 resident artists displaying and working here. In addition, the galleries have about 1,500 members. Visitors are welcome to stop in at each of the studios of the professional artists who work at the Torpedo Factory Art Center. The artists work in view of the public so that visitors may watch art being created and may ask questions about the creative processes. The artists together form the Torpedo Factory Artists' Association.

About the Torpedo Factory Artists’ Association
The Torpedo Factory Artists' Association (TFAA) is a community of professional artists working in cooperation with the Torpedo Factory Art Center Board and the City of Alexandria to make this dynamic art center possible. Artists must go through the annual jury process and orientation session to become a member of the TFAA. All artists working in fine arts and fine crafts are eligible. Fine crafts include such work as ceramics, textiles, jewelry, all kinds of sculpture, glass, film, video, and more. Upon selection, the applicant becomes a TFAA Associate Artist. More information about the TFAA Annual Jury can be found at www.torpedofactory.org/jury

About the Visiting Artist Program (summer residencies)
The Visiting Artist Program is intended to serve as a professional development opportunity for emerging and experienced visual artists and to expose visitors to a new group of artists and projects. Applicants may apply for a one-, two-, or three-month summer residency (June, July, August). The projects undertaken by Visiting Artists for this self-directed, creative residency must be compatible with available working studio spaces and facilities. The Visiting Artist has the opportunity for informal collegial exchanges with Torpedo Factory artists. As part of the program, each Visiting Artist is also asked to give a demonstration, elaborating on his/her work. In addition, Visiting Artists will be able to display and sell original artwork and will be provided with workspace. More information about our Visiting Artist Program can be found at www.torpedofactory.org/vap.

About the Galleries
The Target Gallery (National and international exhibition space) promotes high standards of art by continuously exploring new ideas through the visual media in a schedule of national and international exhibitions. The gallery hosts nine exhibits annually--some juried, some curated--featuring a variety of themes and artists. In an effort to keep our perspective challenged, our exhibits are usually composed of artists outside of the Torpedo Factory and represent artistic views from across the nation and the world.

Founded in 1954, The Art League, Inc. is among the nation’s largest and oldest multi-service organizations for visual artists. As a major component of the cultural fabric of Alexandria, The Art League offers extensive exhibit opportunities for artists through its gallery, outstanding fine art education through the school, and valuable outreach programs to the local community.

The Torpedo Factory Artists’ Association also has four media-specific galleries: Enamelists Gallery, Multiple Exposures Gallery (Photography), Potomac Fiber Arts Gallery, and Scope Gallery (Ceramics).
