Waterfront South Artist Residency

Emerging Program member

Do you want to be part of the excitement of an evolving urban arts district through public art and community engagement while developing your own art? Be among the first artists to live in a newly-renovated 1912 church rectory and create art in a newly-renovated 1890 firehouse. This is time away from your ordinary life to create beauty along with the Waterfront South community.

What is a Waterfront South Artist Residency?

We will provide four (4) artists with free living and studio spaces for periods of three or five months in exchange for 8 hours per week of service on mutually agreed upon community art projects such as murals, park sculptures, street furniture, signage, art exhibitions, and mentoring local artists.

Are you a good fit for this program?

Are you an adventurous artist who wants to make a difference in a creative urban neighborhood while having dedicated time to work on your own projects?

The Camden Shipyard & Maritime Museum was founded in 2008 to transform an 1893 historic church into a local maritime history museum and home for the Urban BoatWorks program, a vibrant craft program that now serves over 100 students per week. With the successful opening of the museum in 2016, we are expanding our creative reach by renovating the former church rectory to create the Waterfront South Artist Residency in partnership with Camden FireWorks. In exchange for free living and studio space, four artists will provide eight hours of work on projects to improve the Waterfront South neighborhood. Public projects could include murals, park sculptures, street furniture, signage, art exhibitions and demonstrations, and mentoring local artists. We welcome all applicants regardless of age, race, gender, sexual orientation, and religion. Given the historic nature of our sites, we are not yet equipped to provide access for wheelchairs at the residency or artist studios. Camden’s Waterfront South is a creative urban environment with a rapidly emerging arts district. In addition to the partners offering this residency, the neighborhood features two writer's houses, a 99-seat theatre, outdoor poetry venues and a host of creative opportunities in a community in transition.
