As a member of the Alliance, I’m regularly reminded of the passion and idealism motivating the members. There is a wealth of insight to be gained by paying attention to the great diversity of programs organized to achieve this end. The enthusiasm generated by this network is greater than the sum of its parts—it is a profound experience to get together with others who take it for granted that creative artists should be honored and supported in their work while they’re alive.

Field at a Glance: Artists Residencies in the US

Author: Alliance of Artists Communities
Published: April 2009

A report on the field of artists' communities and residency programs in the US, conducted July-September 2008. The goal of this report is to provide artists’ residency programs with information that places each program in a broader context and demonstrates the impact of the field nationwide. This summary compiles responses from 131 residency programs in the US to offer a snapshot of the field. The report also touches on important trends, such as the shift from rural residencies to many more urban residencies, as well as the economic impact of residencies.
