Alchemy Prince Edward County Summer 2024

Associated Residency Program

ALCHEMY is an artist-led international residency exploring the common themes between artistic practice and the growing, cooking and sharing of food in community settings. Since 2017, this residency has taken place in rural Hillier, Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada, during the harvest season. More than 100 artists from around the world have joined us in our explorations.

ALCHEMY 2024 plans to host 8-10 artists for two weeks. Participating artists may:

Pursue studio work, likely in a local community public space.

Offer a (paid) community artist talk, workshop or demonstration.

Participate in Open Studio events during the Residency.

Be paired with a local artist, winery or farm to consider work in situ.

Two long-time collaborators will program Alchemy’s 2024 initiatives. Claire M Tallarico is a visual artist and trained chef whose social practice explores how the everyday activities of artmaking and food sharing can contribute to the well-being of artists and further community engagement for a community and its citizens. Tonia Di Risio is a visual artist whose work has developed through ongoing investigations of the growing, making, preserving, celebrating, and sharing of food.

Artists who wish to live in a community setting while creating art and sharing meals are encouraged to apply. Applications must include an artist's CV, an artist statement, a letter of intent, and images/from the artist's website. The accommodation (shared or single), programming, and coordination fee are between $1050 and $1150 in Canadian fees per artist. Bursary and Artist fees info will be posted on our web site, when available.

Details about how and where to submit your application BY APRIL 15th, 2024, can be found at www.makealchemy.com. Questions? Please email: info@makealchemy.com

Dora Maar House Open Call for 2025 Residencies

Associated Residency Program

In 1997, Nancy B. Negley purchased the former residence of Dora Maar. In a five-year effort, she rehabilitated and updated this spacious eighteenth-century, four-story stone residence in the village of Ménerbes. Her goal was to make it a retreat for scholars, artists, and writers, where they could work undisturbed on their research, art, or writing, for one to two months.

Here outstanding mid-career professionals are offered fellowships that enable them to reside in the Dora Maar House and focus on the creative aspects of their work.

A travel award is based on the average fare of travel from the resident's hometown to Paris.

A $1500 stipend is awarded.

ADDITIONAL ACCESSIBILITY INFORMATION

We are sorry to say the house is not completely adapted to persons with limited mobility access. It is on top of a hill in a medieval village. Getting to the house or to any of the stores in the village would be difficult. The rooms and studios are up two flights of stairs, though there is an elevator. The elevator cannot accommodate most wheelchairs. It is a very old house (15th century) and the floors are not even, there are small steps up and down between rooms.

A person with mobility issues can discuss with the staff their specific needs and level of mobility to see if it would be possible. Persons with some but limited mobility have been able to enjoy a month-long residency with some restrictions. Caregiver or companion is allowed in this context, but they must be a partner and willing to share the same bedroom with the fellow.

The Watermill Center: 2024 International Summer Program

Associated Residency Program

The Watermill Center's longest-standing program, The International Summer Program unites a community of international artists for an annual creative intensive. Since 1992, the Summer Program has provided a unique opportunity for artists to develop new works alongside other emerging and established creative professionals, to forge an international community of collaborators across disciplines, and to push the boundaries of contemporary creative practice. Each July and August, approximately 60-100 artists from over 30 countries gather at Watermill’s Long Island, NY site.

Culminating in The Watermill Center’s Annual Summer Benefit, the Summer Program allows artists to develop their practice in a communal and experimental environment. Participating artists share meals, exchange ideas, collaborate on projects, attend workshops, and participate in the daily life of The Watermill Center. The program also provides opportunities to work with Founder/Artistic Director Robert Wilson and his collaborators on workshops, staging rehearsals, and installations.

Artists-in-Residence are immersed in an extensive collection of resources, including; 20,000 square feet of multi-purpose interiors and outdoor stages; a theater production archive; The Watermill Center Library; The Watermill Center Collection; and ten acres of landscaped grounds and sculpture gardens.

Q: How are artists selected to participate in the Summer Program?

A selection committee, including Robert Wilson, chooses the Summer Program participants. Participants are selected based on their artistic abilities and objectives, achievements, and creative potential, as well as how they might be served by, and contribute to, the Summer Program at The Center. Selection is also determined based on the needs of the particular year’s workshops and activities and the need to maintain a diverse group of participants from varying disciplines, countries, and professional and artistic backgrounds while aiming to ensure a balance between new and returning artists.

Q: Who is typically admitted to the Summer Program?

Each year differs, but we generally select artists we are confident will be able to complete an engaging performance or installation during the program. We complement this group by inviting a select number of artists, technicians, and performers who will assist in the construction and presentation of accepted proposals. Artists from all disciplines and backgrounds are welcome to apply.

Q: Is there an age limit? What is the average age of participants?

Any artist over eighteen years old is welcome to apply. On average, artists tend to fall between 20-40 years old.

Mudhouse Residency accepting applications for the July/ August 2024 Residency Session

Associated Residency Program

Our Fellowship Application for 2024 has closed, but we have extended our General Application deadline until 4/14/24. We will be reviewing applications as they are received, with applications received before 3/30 reviewed first.

THREE SESSIONS FOR SUMMER 2024

JUNE 10 - JUNE 24 | JULY 1 - JULY 15 | JULY 22 - AUGUST 5

We will be holding three summer residency sessions in 2024; from June until the beginning of August. Fellowship and General Applications for Visual Artists & Writers are open! Deadline to apply is 3/30/24.

The Mudhouse is an artist residency located in the village of Agios Ioannis on the Island of Crete, Greece. The Mudhouse Residency aims to provide artists inspiration derived from an engagement with the stunning natural beauty of its environment, solitude to foster creative growth, an artistic community to enrich professional practices, and an immersive cultural experience within a profoundly rich historical context.

Started in 2015 and now in its eighth year, the Mudhouse offers three two-week sessions each summer for international contemporary artists working across a manifold of artistic disciplines, from paint, to ceramics, to experimental film. We welcome visual artists, writers, musicians and performers. Hosting an incredibly diverse, multicultural, multi-generational cohort of artists in each residency session, the Mudhouse encourages dialogues across traditional boundaries. Artists are invited to present a slideshow, lecture or reading on their work for fellow residents, as well as participate in a closing exhibition at the Residency’s conclusion that will be installed jointly in the ruins around the village and the exhibition space. The artists' time is their own, to focus on their art practice and explore the rich history of southern Crete and the Minoan civilization.

As an artist founded and operated residency, the Mudhouse’s ethos continues to be to provide an increasingly diverse group of artists an affordable, international residency experience. Through the support of individual donors and foundations, the Mudhouse is able to extend a Partial Fellowship to every artist who attends, and three Full Fellowships. All fellowships are awarded through a competitive, juried process. Determined by a selection committee, Full fellowships will be based on the merit of the applicants work while Partial fellowships will be need based.

Partial fellowship recipients are asked to pay a reduced fee to attend. While the overall cost of The Mudhouse Residency is $4,200 per artist for the Summer 2024, the residency fee for partially funded fellowships is $3200. Artists who demonstrate additional financial need may request further financial assistance of a 25% discount, bringing the residency fee to $2600.

Its name, the Mudhouse, derived from the specific building technique once used to construct this former medieval shepherds village, actively seeks to revitalize the culture and economy of this once burgeoning agricultural community which fell into abandonment in the 1980’s. Now colloquially known as the “artist” village the Mudhouse aims to benefit the local community that is its home. Bringing cultural life to this formerly deserted village, residents look forward to meeting international artists, and toward their exhibitions and artist presentations. Economically, the Mudhouse Residency supports the village by housing each of the residents in local accommodations and providing meals at the local taverna, the Kafeneio. The Mudhouse Residency includes the accommodations of the artist for the duration of the Residency, as well as lunch and dinner served family style each day within the village. Prepared by Christina, a talented cook and mother of two, who inherited the Kafeneio from her mother and grandmother, our program keeps Christina in business and provides incentive to the villagers to keep Agios Ioannis alive and well.

Thinking and acting locally, internationally, and globally, the Mudhouse encourages its residents to consider the existential threat that climate change poses to us all. Set within a stunning rural mountain village in southern Crete overlooking the Libyan Sea, the Mudhouse confronts resident artists with an extraordinary natural beauty, that belies its context as one of the first landscapes irretrievably altered by humankind. Emphasizing the value of artistic solutions, the Mudhouse asks and empowers its residents to engage this crisis.

Duration:

Two weeks. We will be holding three residency sessions in 2024; the first session will be June 10 - June 24, the second session will be July 1 - July 15 and the third session will be July 22 - August 5.

Disciplines:

The residency program is ideal for professional artists with an established practice seeking the time and space to realize an individual project. The residency includes 24 hr access to a spacious studio facility, practice space with athletic flooring, or access to the Music house grand piano, depending on the artist's discipline. We welcome writers, photographers and filmmakers as well, as our residency provides the time and structure to focus on a non-studio based project.

The residency is inclusive to a number of artistic disciplines, with the facilities to accommodate studio artists, painters, printmakers, filmmakers, ceramicists, fiber artists, photographers, writers, poets, dancers, musicians, choreographers and composers.

Accommodation:

Artists are provided housing in local accommodations around the village. Artists have their own private bedroom, and may have a private bathroom or may share a bathroom with one other artist. Artists may share a kitchen and sitting room, based on the particular accommodation. Every accommodation has a kitchen and a terrace. Housing assignments are at the discretion of the directors, but we do our best to house the artists in accommodations that facilitate their project based needs. Agios Ioannis has a large international community, with residents from Italy, England and Australia, in addition to Greece. Each residence was rebuilt from the ruins of the original stone village to the specific taste of the owner, and no two residences are alike. Linen is provided and laundry facilities are available. WiFi is available for basic internet use at the Taverna. Most accommodations do not have WiFi.

Mudhouse Residency accepting applications for the July 2024 Residency Session
