Boston Center for the Arts (BCA) is accepting applications for our next Studio Residency cohort starting in the Fall of 2024, providing work-only studio space in BCA’s Artist Studios Building in Boston’s South End, along with other programmatic benefits.  Studio space is located in BCA's Artist Studios Building (ASB) at 551 Tremont Street; maximum studio term is 33 months (2 ¾ years). The group will join a vibrant group of artists already participating in the Studio Residency program.

This year, thanks to generous support from Wagner Foundation, artists selected for the Fall 2024 Studio Residency program will receive fully awarded studio space for a maximum term of 33 months, from September 15, 2024-June 15, 2027. The 2024 BCA Studio Resident cohort, funded by Wagner Foundation, allow us to make real strides in the work of creating greater equity and opportunity to Boston-area artists for whom financial support and artistic community come at a catalytic moment in their practice. Selection of this cohort of artists will be based on artists' demonstration of the financial as well as artistic impact of a fully awarded studio on their practice.

In addition to enjoying 24/7 access to individual studio space, BCA Studio Residents can participate in:

• Monthly Informal Gatherings to chat, catch up, ask questions etc, with snacks;
• Studio visits from BCA’s studio residency Fall and Spring Visiting Curators as well as other arts professionals including curators, gallerists and arts writers, made available to Studio Residents on a sign up basis; 
• BCA Studios Open House, coinciding with Mills Gallery opening receptions and other BCA events and promoted by BCA (approx 4 per year); 
• Ongoing “Plus One” private receptions in the Mills Gallery, with invited colleagues from the Boston arts community (approx 4 per year), and,
• Ongoing Opportunities for Project Room Exhibitions in BCA’s Mills Gallery Project Room, available on an application basis.

The last two opportunities continue beyond the end term of each artist’s studio residency, as BCA Studio Residency Alumni are also invited to participate in our “Plus One” receptions and to apply for Project Room Exhibitions.

Important Notes:

• Studios in the building are WORK ONLY, not live-work space;
• Studios and common space in the building may not be the site of any public events, which means that any non-residents coming into the building must be entering on the basis of an individual invitation; and
• The studios building is a four floor, walk-up building, with no elevator and no loading dock.

We look forward to inviting artists across disciplines to pursue their art through the BCA Studio Residency program, within the realistic constraints and restrictions related to the physical structure itself, which includes a particulate-based fire suppression system, non-sound-proofed walls and floors, sometimes spotty wi-fi and old pipes.

We welcome applications from artists at all career stages, income levels, and geographic locations. We primarily seek applications from visual artists (painters, sculptors, installation artists, photographers, video/new media artists, fiber artists, printmakers, etc.). Our studios are not well suited for artists who do not work quietly (nothing is sound-proofed). In addition, the studios have only light ventilation, so an art practice generating strong fumes cannot be accommodated. 

We anticipate that artists selected for this cohort of BCA’s Studio Residency program will have the opportunity to move into their studio space as of September 15, 2024. 

Programmatic events and activities will commence in late September and early October 2024.  Studio Residency artists may remain in the program for a maximum of 33 months (through June 15, 2027).  This group joins a vibrant group of artists already participating in the Studio Residency program.

Open to any artist who has participated in Bemis Center’s Residency Program or has exhibited at Bemis since the organization’s founding in 1981, the Alumni Program ensures the organization’s ongoing relevance, impact, and connection to its former artists by providing financial resources and unique opportunities and expanding professional networks. Two alumni will be selected to participate in a 4-6 week Alumni Residency to be scheduled during a 2023 residency session; January 18–April 14, May 17–August 11, or September 13–November 10, 2023. U.S.-based artists-in-residence receive a $250 USD weekly stipend, a $750 USD travel stipend, and an additional $2,500 USD unrestricted materials stipend. Due to the limitations of B2 visas (touring/visiting), international artists-in-residence are eligible to receive reimbursement of qualified expenses, such as airfare, ground transportation, and meals. Selected artists are responsible for organizing travel to Omaha to attend the residency. *Please note, participation in the residency program or exhibition program is a requirement to apply. Artists must wait two years to apply after attending the residency program or participating in an exhibition at Bemis to be eligible.

Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts launched its Sound Art + Experimental Music Program in May 2019 with generous support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Embedded within Bemis Center’s renowned international Residency Program, this opportunity offers a unique experience for two artists working in sound, composition, voice, and experimental genres and tools. National and international artists participating in the program receive financial, technical, and administrative support, along with dedicated facilities for rehearsing, recording, and performing new works that expand the field of sound art and music. Two selected artists-in-residence will enjoy a generously sized, private live/work studio complete with kitchen and bathroom. Artists may select which 2023 session to attend: January 18–April 14 or May 17–August 11. Awarded U.S.-based artists-in-residence receive a $2,000 USD monthly stipend, a $750 USD travel stipend, a $7,000 USD materials budget, and a $1,600 USD shipping budget to cover the transportation of items or equipment to and from the residency. Due to the limitations of B2 visas (touring/visiting), international artists-in-residence are eligible to receive reimbursement of qualified expenses, such as airfare, ground transportation, and meals. Sound Art + Experimental Music artists-in-residence have 24-hour access to Bemis Center’s Sound Studio, a 1,000 square foot shared workspace that includes a variety of instruments, microphones, and software to assist and expand creative processes. Selected residents will also have access to installation and production spaces and the Okada Sculpture & Ceramics Facility. This is an independently-driven, process-based residency in a communal environment, fostering creative growth, experimentation, and supportive exchange. There are no expectations placed on residents to create or perform.

Marble House Project is a multi-disciplinary artist residency program that fosters collaboration & the exchange of ideas by providing an environment for artists across disciplines to live and work side by side. Each session hosts eight artists and is carefully curated to bring together a group of creative workers across various disciplines, who might collaborate and learn from one another. Applications . include but is not limited to visual arts, writing, choreography, music composition and performance. There are six sessions that last for three weeks. The AIR season runs from late February through mid November. Artists are selected based on the quality and commitment to their work and their project description. It is important to note that each session is specifically curated in order to maximize the art residency experience for each individual artist. All residents live together in the historic, eight-bedroom Manley-Lefevre house, which is organized around a responsibilities-sharing system, highlighting sustainability and fostering community. We provide fresh ingredients and all residents will be asked to cook dinner (in a pair) three to four times over the course of their residency. Although not required, our hope is that you will spend some time in the garden alongside your studio practice. At the end of each session, artists are invited to present their work at ART SEED. This takes the form of talks, performances and open studios.

THE HORTUS RESIDENCY PROGRAM IS OPEN TO ESTABLISHED AND EMERGING VISUAL ARTISTS

WHO ARE EXPLORING THEMES OF NATURE AND/OR THE HUMAN CONNECTION WITH NATURE.

About the residency – The Hortus Residency is open to established and emerging artists exploring the themes of nature and/or the human connection with nature.

Hortus Arboretum & Botanical Garden is an accredited botanical garden and arboretum located in the lower Hudson Valley.

It was established by two artists turned gardeners. This residency was formed to provide opportunities for artists whose work focuses on nature. The residency will allow artists access to the botanical garden as part of their residency experience.

Housing: The Barnette is a small house situated in the hamlet of Stone Ridge located in the lower Catskill mountains of New York state. The Barnette is situated in a rural region on the edge of the Hortus gardens, surrounded by woods and overlooking NY state-protected wetlands. The Barnett is a greenhouse with solar panels, heat on demand, a wood stove, a 1-large bedroom, a modern bathroom, air conditioning, and an outside deck. It has easy access to the Hortus Arboretum & Botanical Garden. The Barnette has Hi-Speed Internet. Smoking is not permitted on the property.

Meals: Residents make and provide their own meals. The Barnette has a fully stocked kitchen.
