La Porte Peinte’s five comfortable bedrooms are supplemented by four bedrooms in a nearby annex, another imposing and atmospheric medieval house. There are eight private studio spaces, along with workshop spaces and event spaces that are available for classes and performances. Along with residency accommodation, each creator in residence chooses from among those available the private studio space

Ucross is an artist residency program located on a 20,000-acre ranch at the foothills of the Bighorn Mountains of northern Wyoming.

Over the past 41 years, Ucross has grown into a vital and relevant resource for artists of all backgrounds and disciplines, who travel to the remote ranch from across the nation and the world. The uninterrupted time and space offered in the majestic High Plains are increasingly rare. The connections built within its community are of great importance.

Ucross strives to provide a respectful, comfortable, and productive environment, freeing artists from the pressures and distractions of daily life. The residency program provides each artist with living accommodations, private work space, and uninterrupted time, so the artists can focus on their creative process. Lunch and dinners are prepared Monday through Friday by a professional chef, with access to a world-class kitchen and ample provisions on hand for breakfasts and weekends. Lunches are delivered to individual studios; group dinners take place at 6 p.m. Towels and linens are provided, as is weekly housekeeping for bedrooms.

Residents are responsible for providing their own working materials. There is no residency charge, and Ucross offers a $1,500 stipend.

The Tournesol Award recognizes an emerging Bay Area painter in support of establishing and maintaining a career in the region. The Award supports a full year of artistic development, and includes a $10,000 stipend, a private studio, and a culminating exhibition or project of the artist’s choice.

Program Details

• Award Period: July 1, 2024-June 26, 2025
• Fully sponsored, year-long residency with a $10,000 stipend
• Final project, typically in the form of an exhibition or a publication, at the conclusion of the 12-month period
• 750-sq.-foot studio

Eligibility

• Artist works primarily with paint on a two-dimensional surface.
• Artist’s primary residence must be in the Bay Area. “Bay Area” is defined as Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, Santa Clara, San Francisco, San Mateo, Solano, and Sonoma counties.
• Artist is in early stages of their career and can show dedication to their practice. Indications of early career stage AND dedication include:
  • Graduation from an accredited MFA program within the past five years, or a BFA, or equivalent recent non-academic experience and dedication.
  • Participation in significant group and/or solo exhibitions.
  • Has NOT had a retrospective showing with a significant institution or gallery.
• Alumni of Headlands’ Artists Programs are eligible to apply, with the exception of past recipients of Alumni New Works, Bay Area Fellowship, Chamberlain, Chiaro, or Tournesol Awards. Former Artists in Residence (AIR) may apply three years after their previous residency.
• Candidates may not be enrolled in a degree granting program during the term of the award.

Selection Criteria

• Merit of past work.
• Demonstrated commitment to pursuing excellence and innovation in the discipline of painting.
• Readiness to engage with and benefit from the experience at Headlands (see program goals).
• Economic need will also be considered, secondary to an emphasis on talent and commitment to painting.

Selection Process

• Headlands’ staff reviews to ensure application completion and eligibility.
• Submissions reviewed by a jury of knowledgeable and esteemed artists and arts professionals (particularly those with strong understanding of painting).
• The jury evaluates each artist’s materials and selects finalists.
• Finalists are invited to present their work in a 20-minute Zoom interview to determine the final award selection.

• Letter of interest, outlining your specific interest in working at Headlands and how program participation will affect your practice
• List of three references and email addresses; please note, we do not want letters of reference
• Documentation of recent work; submit up to 15 images.

The Chiaro Award is a fully sponsored artist residency and $15,000 prize for a mid-career painter residing in the United States. The Chiaro Award residency includes a private studio, and inclusion in a dynamic network of Headlands’ creative practitioners and thinkers.

Headlands’ Artist in Residence (AIR) program awards fully sponsored residencies to approximately 50 local, national, and international artists each year. Residencies of four to ten weeks include studio space, chef-prepared meals, comfortable housing, and travel and living expense reimbursements. AIRs become part of a dynamic community of artists participating in Headlands’ other programs, allowing for exchange and collaborative relationships to develop within the artist community on campus.

Chamberlain Award is a fully sponsored artist residency and $10,000 prize to support an artist working in the social practice discipline. This award supports artists employing non-traditional media to creatively engage with social concerns of the day.

The Artist in Residence program at Grand Canyon National Park offers artists the opportunity to practice and share their discipline with park visitors at one of the most beautiful sites in the world. Through impactful, site-specific, community-engaged work, the program seeks to inspire the community to deepen their knowledge of Grand Canyon National Park. 

The program is tied directly to the National Park Service Interpretation and Resource Education goal of inclusive storytelling and Grand Canyon Conservancy’s mission to inspire generations of park champions to cherish and support the natural and cultural wonder of Grand Canyon. 

Contemporary artists focused on site-specific community engagement, social practice, and immersive or interactive artworks are encouraged to apply. We seek a variety of voices and strategies for engaging our visitors in underrepresented stories about the park.  

Annually, three artists are selected to live and work on the South Rim of Grand Canyon in Arizona. Artists in Residence stay in a private apartment overlooking the Canyon for 3-10 weeks and receive media exposure, a weekly stipend, and modest support with supply and travel costs. Additionally, residents have special access to Grand Canyon National Park, park leadership, staff expertise, on-site resources, archives, and international visitors. Alumni are often invited to participate in additional opportunities like proposal reviews, webinars, blog posts, and local exhibitions. 

This Open Call is for a special session for artists with young families, running July 29 - August 5, 2024. 

The NISDA Artist Community welcomes emerging and professional artists and educators in all fields including, but not limited to, classical photography, painting, ceramics, textiles, writing, music, performance and any alternative projects committed to the creative process.

NISDA is especially interested in interdisciplinary art, art in the environment and conceptual works. We welcome educators pursuing the integration of the arts and interdisciplinary projects in their classrooms. NISDA’s residency is an on-your-own, self-structured experience that provides time and your studio for personal renewal. In July & August you may arrange open studio time to work NISDA’s Long Shed Ceramics Studio at SeaView Farm, in addition to working in your Atlantic House Residency Studio or in the Nantucket landscape.

NISDA’s OAR Atlantic House is just a short mile down the road from our Historic Seaview Farm Dairy Barn and Long Shed Community Center school facilities – we welcome you to create, work and collaborate with the other Artists, the Community and enjoy our Cultural Arts Lectures and Events!
