Description and Qualifications

Virginia Commonwealth University and the VCU School of the Arts (VCUarts) invite nominations and applications for the position of Executive Director of the Institute for Contemporary Art (ICA).

The ICA has become a focal point of Richmond’s energetic arts district, serving as a nexus for creativity and inclusion, where innovative thinking and transformational ideas are drawn from a spectrum of disciplines. In a striking building designed by Stephen Holl, the ICA is positioned minutes away from the highly regarded Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, with easy access to museums, galleries, and institutions up and down the East Coast. Unlike museums that house permanent collections, the ICA’s responsive exhibitions and performances invite audience engagement and challenge visitors to experience and examine art in unexpected ways.

The ICA seeks a visionary leader who will provide the creative vision, leadership and strategic direction to further shape its role as an outstanding arts institution and part of the highly-ranked VCUarts. The executive director will be a convener of extraordinary ideas and a curious, inspiring, innovative, entrepreneurial, and experienced collaborator who brings to the role a record of achievement reflective of the ICA’s standards of excellence.

Reporting directly to the Dean of VCUarts, who also serves as the Special Assistant to the Provost for VCUarts Qatar, the executive director has a secondary reporting relationship to the University Provost. This position is an Executive and Senior Leader Staff position; however, candidates may be eligible for a term (non-tenure eligible) faculty appointment depending upon their qualifications and experience. The executive director could teach in a discipline that aligns with their area of expertise. Within the context of VCUarts’ mission, the executive director will leverage the ICA’s unique positioning in an arts and design school, within an R1 research university, at the intersection of Richmond’s rich and diverse community.

The successful candidate will hold a terminal degree in a relevant discipline and will have proven experience in administration and a strong track record in fundraising, development and budgeting, supplementing their capacity for driving dynamic, innovative and experimental programing. This individual will closely collaborate with the faculty, key volunteer leaders, staff, students, and community to incorporate the ICA into VCUarts’ strategic plan that aligns with the university’s strategic plan, Quest 2028: One VCU Together We Transform.

A 501(c)(3) located in the Wynwood Norte neighborhood of Miami, our mission is to address the need for affordable live, live-work, and workspaces for artists in Miami’s urban core and provide opportunities for artists to engage with the broader community.

Founded in 1985 by artists and for artists in a former industrial Art Deco-era bakery, Bakehouse provides studio residencies, infrastructure, and community to enable the highest level of artistic creativity, development, and collaboration for the most promising talent. These spaces allow artists to work, make, discover, learn, and share their practices and work with each other and the broader community.

Bakehouse is positioned for its next stage of development, seeking to play a more critical role in the collective efforts to build a strong and sustainable ecosystem in which artists and the arts can thrive. A plan is currently underway to redevelop our 2.3-acre campus to better serve the needs of Miami’s cultural community. This future project, now in the planning stages, will encompass the renovation of the main and former industrial bakery building and the addition of new cultural spaces and affordable live-work units for artists and other members of the community. Bakehouse hopes to become an important cultural anchor to the community in which it is embedded.

Visual Arts Thematic Residency - The System and Other Universes

Overview

We invite artists to retreat to Banff and spend time quietly working alone, looking inward, connecting with the natural world, and engaging with others away from professional stress and pressure.

With a focus on studio practice, artists will be encouraged to reflect on “why” they are making art, for “whom”, and to “what” end? In what ways do market influences and institutional expectations consciously or unconsciously impact our work? How does making art heal or help the world? Visual Arts Thematic Residency – The System and Other Universes welcomes participants to consider new, unique, or radical paradigms for being an artist in shifting, uncertain times.

The aim is not to seek conclusions, but to welcome concern, curiosity, and the unknown into a safe and supportive environment.  Those who question the purpose and destinations of their practice and are open to exploring alternate routes and sources from which to create, are encouraged to apply.

This residency will be gently led, with an abundance of time to work in the studio and explore Minhrpa, Banff National Park, and Treaty 7 territory.

All manners and approaches of art-making are welcome, with a special invitation to artists who are members of equity seeking groups including women, Indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities, visible minorities, and members of communities that face marginalization based on age, ethnicity, economic status, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, race, transgender status, etc.

What does the program offer?

This program offers a structured space where visual artists come together to create work and discuss the pertinent theme, as well as time and space to delve deeply into their practice while away from the constraints of everyday life. Through peer interaction, studio work, formal lectures, and studio visits from world-renowned visiting faculty, participants gain new ideas and insights that can be applied to creative exploration and professional development of their work.

Participants are provided with a studio, accessible 24 hours a day, as well as targeted access to our extensive facilities. Facility access is based on availability of facilitators, and priority access is given to those requesting their use in their initial application.

In addition, artists can build connections, create networks, and share their work with other artists-in-residence and the public.

Who should apply?

This residency is for visual artists who have completed formal education or training at the post-secondary level, or who have acquired equivalent experience through traditional knowledge and practices, and who have received recognition from their peers.

This program is designed for participation over the entire program period. Variable dates will not be considered. Collaborative groups are welcome to apply. Groups no larger than two people will be considered.

Banff Centre invites applicants from anywhere in the world, and artists of all ages (18+), backgrounds, gender identities, and expressions.

Independent Residency: Leighton Artist Studios - Fall/Winter 2024/25

Overview

Leighton Artist Studio residencies are geared to professional artists working on major research-creation projects or new bodies of work. The program is best suited to artists who are self-motivated, focused, and wanting time and space for introspection. The Leighton Artist Studios comprise nine distinct architect-designed studios suitable for individual artists working in the following disciplines:

  • writing for stage and screen
  • composing and songwriting
  • literary arts
  • visual arts
  • critical and curatorial writing.

A tenth studio, the Painter House, is suitable for groups of two to eight artists working collaboratively. Formal and informal collectives, ensembles, inter-disciplinary collaborators and Indigenous cultural groups are invited to apply for residencies at the Painter House between November 18 - December 13, 2024 and January 6 - March 28, 2025.

What does the program offer?

Independent residencies at the Leighton Artist Studios offer professional artists an inspiring retreat environment for the development of their work. The program offers secluded space and focused time for artistic research, experimentation and project development. Each unique studio is designed by a distinguished Canadian architect and provides a perfect setting for projects requiring focus and time for contemplation.

Artists working in the Leighton Artist Studios can engage with the community on campus by attending talks, performances, exhibitions, and joining in the Participant Resources activity calendar.

There is no access to specialized production facilities, technical support, or equipment loans during a Leighton Studios residency. Please refer to each studio page to see what is included within the footprint of the studio, to decide if this is the appropriate residency for you.

If your project requires production support, please consider applying to one of our other artist in residence programs in Literary Arts, Performing Arts, Indigenous Arts or Visual Arts.

Who should apply?

Projects must fit clearly within one of the artistic disciplines outlined above. The application must include a clearly articulated project description and a resume that demonstrates a strong record of accomplishment. Artists who have participated in a Leighton Studio residency in the past three years are not eligible to apply.

Artists of all ages (18+), cultural backgrounds, gender identities and expressions are encouraged to apply. Applications are adjudicated by a rotating panel of internal and external adjudicators. Participants are selected on the basis of artistic merit. The program is highly competitive given the limited number of studios available.

Please note nine of the Leighton Artists Studios are located in the woods and are accessed via a gravel pathway. Due to their remote location on campus they are currently not wheelchair accessible. Please contact us if you require wheelchair accessible accommodations.

Overview

Working with renowned faculty and knowledgeable staff, the Summer Banff Artist in Residence (BAiR) 2024 program offers visual artists the time, space, and resources to engage in intensive, self-directed research and studio practice, build community, and learn new skills in a supportive learning environment.

Over five weeks, participants are encouraged to self-direct their research and time, as well as cultivate new directions in their work. The experience of artists in residence is further supported through individual studio visits with guest faculty and dialogue amongst peers.
